@canonlawyered "Plushie" has been around for a long time, even when I was a kid. "Stuffie," however, is new to me

“Plushie” and “stuffie” and not words, and just started being used ex nihilo a few years ago. Just say “stuffed animal” or “plush toy” like a decent, God fearing member of society.

@swamthetiber25 Jerome gives both translations since, as you said, it was widely debated in his day! Matthew's version got the "supersubstantial" translation, whereas Luke's version got "quotidianum" or "daily," despite both Matthew and Luke using "epiousios." Super cool!

In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus teaches us to ask the Father: “Give us this day our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11) But the Greek word translated as “daily” is epiousios, a word so unique it appears nowhere else in all of Greek literature. It is not the ordinary word for daily (hemeran or kathēmerinon), and even ancient scholars struggled to define it. Many early Church Fathers, including St. Jerome, St. Cyril of Jerusalem, and Origen, interpreted epiousios as meaning “supersubstantial,” something beyond earthly sustenance. St. Jerome, translating the Gospel into Latin, rendered it as panem supersubstantialem: the superessential or heavenly bread. This interpretation leads directly to the Eucharist. The petition in the Lord’s Prayer is not merely for physical food but for the Bread of Life, the true food that sustains the soul, Jesus Himself in the Eucharist.

@fr_faulkner Lol right, and it really shows when you actually follow the rubric because, when you kick the lights on, everyone just thinks the candles being lit later was a mistake since electrical lighting makes them an afterthought.

@kmtran95 I’m convinced a mistake was made when the rubric was written by someone who just wasn’t thinking through b/c they were trying to balance too many different pieces at once. And then afterwards people had to stick with it b/c that’s what was written. And then it became this test.

Confessions during Holy Week are like gym memberships the week after New Year's: Full for the one week, back to normal the week after. Just take your rest week (stop sinning) this week like every other gym bro does in Jan, and I promise things will be dead slow next Wed/Fri/Sat.

If you're in the box regularly, it's not like you're not welcome, but come on. If you're getting mad that new people are coming to Confession before Easter, they're not the problem. You are.

In a world that constantly changes, there are 3 things I trust will never change: > The Good News of Jesus Christ > Costco's $1.50 hot dog + soda combo > 99¢ Arizona sweet tea

@the_mclarke @Joeinblack Most common reason a priest would hear a Confession in the sacristy is because it's both a convenient and private place to meet right after Mass, esp since people know you're in there. Can't begin to tell you how many people knock on the door before and after Mass....

I was ordained in 1998. I took a group of sophomores on retreat at a retreat center. We had a hard leave time because we needed to take the bus to get back to school before the buses left. So, it was time to pray mass and when I went to the sacristy to vest, I could not get in: a priest was in there hearing confessions from another retreat. In the end, I got a stole from my truck and explained to the students I was not able to wear vestments because of a weird situation. I told them this shouldn’t happen but I couldn’t figure out another way. During mass, the Bishop (Karl) came in to see the mass. The next day, he called and tore me a new one for 20 minutes. He was furious. I explained the situation and he told me in the future to not pray mass if I was not able to vest properly. I asked his forgiveness and learned my lesson. I say this because priests are normal people. We make mistakes and learn and grow. Somewhere out there is a picture of me praying mass in my clerics and a stole. You can post it and condemn me or rejoice that I learned something. The outrage machine is consuming people like this poster I’m replying to and it’s a tragedy. Jesus promises us that the measure we use to measure others will be measured back to us. I think of that every day.

Thanks everyone for the song help for Greed. I had to go with "I Want It Now" from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but I was able to weave Grande in too when we were questioning whether you could be greedy for things besides money or possessions. Now it is on to Anger...what songs come to mind? Bonus if students know it (and it can be played in a class :)). And has to be better than the classic Carrie Underwood or Alanis Morissette songs, as otherwise I'm going with them.

Tomorrow, the Scottish Parliament will vote on assisted suicide, legalising (or even forcing) doctors to help their patients kill themselves. Wednesday, the UK House of Lords will vote on abortion up to birth. This week the UK has a choice: life or death. Choose life.
