@ColinSeanKing @madswag4315 I think that “widespread crime” thing is a feeling more than anything else. People have the sense that the city is dangerous, so it is. I’m not saying bad stuff doesn’t happen here, the way it does everywhere, but if you want a sense of how bad crime is you really need stats.

I was born in Chicago and lived in the city from 1971 to 2003. During that time, I lived in Bucktown, Humboldt Park, Wrigleyville, Marquette Park, South Loop, and Logan Square. I worked for the Chicago Park District and spent time in over 20 different parks and beaches. I've watched the city I love change from a place I called home to a place I now visit occasionally to see family and friends. Crime, once confined to specific neighborhoods, is now widespread. Many businesses are leaving the city due to crime and unfavorable tax policies. Some members of the city council lean towards Marxism and see law enforcement and business owners as the issues that need fixing rather than using common sense. I still love Chicago, but I do so from a distance now. A few years ago, my sister witnessed a murder in front of my mom's house on Fairfield and 66th Street. I worry about my family who still lives in Chicago every day. So when you see negative comments online, remember that some of us genuinely love the city but can no longer live there because of everything going on.

@BorisBartlog @tracewoodgrains In recent history, they get into office right after a Republican has crashed the economy, spend their entire term correcting it, only to be replaced by a Republican successor who gets credit for all their work.

@krieghan @tracewoodgrains I mean, the Democrats do in fact get in to office all the time! In that sense it's, uh, frequently enough? It is true that there's some weird psychological angle where the Democrats don't get enough credit for the economy most of the time, but it doesn't stop them from winning.

if one lesson you took from watching the latest Trump campaign was not “win by moving to the center,” you were not paying attention

@tracewoodgrains Those upgrades would make their labor redundant, and remove their bargaining power. I'm not saying progress should be stopped permanently, but we can't expect them to take it lying down. We live in a market economy, and they are behaving like rational actors in that market.

@krieghan my core problem is that they are striking on behalf of goals that hurt the public. whether they're doing a bad or good job in the abstract matters less than their willingness to obstruct innovation (including upgrades most developed countries have)

This man is one reason our ports look like this, and he is willing to threaten you to keep it that way. Automate the ports.

@tracewoodgrains So, your problem is that they're doing a bad job, not that they're threatening to strike?

@krieghan Consistently bad ports that people treat as damage to route around? Yes, what they’re asking for is quite unreasonable.

@lemire That’s a little over 10x improvement. Frankly, I’d expect more of a difference between c++ and python. This was probably worthwhile because it’s being executed so often, but I’d still question how much money this is really saving.

A bit of future-game news. Ben is designing the next in-house Wadjet Eye project. The initial story (and art sketches) are looking *amazing* even at this early stage. We've got two other projects to launch before we can shout about it, but until then you can enjoy his devlogs
Ben Chandler@ben_304

I wrote another devlog, about the early stages of prototyping a new game as someone who hasn't done this in years. :) ben304.blogspot.com/2024/09/devlog…

What's the best pizza in Chicago near Millenium Park? I am guessing because it's touristy there it's not a hub of great food but I'd still appreciate any recommendations. I actually don't care if it's deep dish vs. tavern style as long as it's GOOD.

@jesawyer Playing through NWN2 at the moment. It has autosaves, but they only activate once in awhile. I've had game freezes that set me back quite awhile. I'd rather have quicksave.

@politicalmath The argument is strong enough to stand on its own. The agendas of those making the argument are not relevant.

That is why we can never take this argument seriously. Because it isn't serious. They will never argue in favor of the popular vote if they can't win it. They only care about power. They will leverage any rhetoric that gives them power.

@unclebobmartin @ChristinGorman Imagine if there were Hamas operatives in Europe or the US, and Israel started killing large numbers of civilians in Western nations just to ensure the end of Hamas. It makes no sense - no one would stand for it.

@unclebobmartin @ChristinGorman I'll admit that morality can be elusive, but choosing to kill tens of thousands (perhaps in excess of a hundred thousand) civilians to root out a terrorist organization is not a moral act. The only way they are able to get away with it is that the victims are mostly Muslim.

I follow quite a few supporters of the Israeli attacks in Gaza, and they argue exactly like a violent husband/father justifying themselves: "Now look what you made me do!" "I'm teaching you a necessary lesson" "I'm only behaving like anyone else would in my place"
