seems like such a basic thing - why does @Walgreens allow you to book vaccine appointments at pharmacies that do not have that vaccine in stock? This has happened to be 3 times in the last 2 days now!

You didn’t ask, but hey I’m in favor of affirmative action, especially in college admissions. The real reason is that education is the best way I’ve ever encountered to sustainably uplift individuals. Do that enough times, and you’re uplifting communities. You’re changing the world. I’m not really one of these people who wants endless self-flagellation for the sins of our fathers, but the reality is that today we have a pretty unequal society across about a hundred different axes (and there are many ways we all continue to perpetuate it.) There are a lot of people working on this problem from a lot of different angles, but education is one of the best and most effective. Not just access, but the actual experience and design of the education product itself. If a private institution wants to have a mission that not only do they change the world with their excellent education, they change it by providing it to groups of people where the change can have a huge impact, I’m in favor of letting them say and do that. If they think all of their students are better educated by living in a student body for four years that includes all sorts of people, maybe people they didn’t grow up with, maybe people they will encounter more of in the future, I’m ok with that. Actually, I think both of those are great ideas. There are historical examples of this working extremely well. I really admire the legacy of institutions like Brandeis, Kamehameha Schools, Seven Sisters schools like Wellesley, and HBCUs like Howard, Xavier, and many other excellent institutions in those traditions. I think most colleges and universities could learn a lot from these places, and the country would unequivocally be worse off had they not existed at critical moments in our history. I think the goal of focusing on DEI at nearly every highly selective college and university in the country has been to participate in some small way to the furthering of the same missions as those institutions. But I think at a minimum, I cannot agree that SCOTUS should be telling private institutions what they can and can’t do with their own missions. Especially considering that these are noble goals for any independent non-profit. I don’t buy the argument that it matters whether or not the private institutions receive money from the government. In these cases, the government is spending money and getting value in return. These are not gifts from the taxpayers. We are buying products, services, and research outcomes. And yes absolutely we are investing the future of the country. It’s not a handout. And I think if public institutions want to directly take on these goals as part of their charters, it also makes sense! A more educated population, across the population, improves the future of the country and reduces the huge amount we spend on services for folks who likely could have been helped with a leg up much earlier in life. Public funding of education is ROI positive. And the more that the education helps a student’s outcome, the higher the ROI. The reality is that any time you sit down across the table from a promising 18 year old with stellar test scores, perfect GPA, extracurriculars, and probably most importantly a hunger to learn and desire to join a community of learners - as I have done many times over 15+ years - the decision is fucking excruciating. Because at any highly selective institution, there are way more highly qualified candidates than there are spots. Some people are going home disappointed, some devastated, and it always feels like slamming the door in someone’s face, even when you are over the moon about every candidate. Nobody should take that process lightly. I don’t think most people do. Anyway, AA is illegal now, so obviously Olin College, where I am a Trustee but certainly don’t speak for anyone but myself (they don’t read my tweets,) is going to conform to the law like everyone else. Olin put out their statement, but I also like this one from Harvard.

We were trying to figure out what to do with our house when we relocated to the bay. I’m feeling so much relief right now that (1) we figured out that the math didn’t math on airbnbing our place (2) we secured a long term renter

The Airbnb collapse is real. Revenues are down nearly 50% in cities like Phoenix and Austin. Watch out for a wave of forced selling from Airbnb owners later this year in the areas hit hardest by the revenue collapse.

Next Wednesday, large parts of Texas will be hotter than 99% of the planet during the peak of the heatwave. Widespread temperatures of 110˚F or higher are forecast. Only the Sahara Desert & Persian Gulf area will be as hot or hotter (🟡) than the Lone Star State 🥵

OK so. I’m trying to source a tenant to rent my house. One prospective tenant parked his car at my house, but drove it right over an agave in my front yard. Would I be an asshole to request reimbursement?
