The global numbers are out and 2024 was the world's warmest year since records began in 1850. Global surface temperature was 2.32°F (1.29°C) above the 20th-century average. The 10 warmest years since 1850 have all occurred in the past decade.

The new 8-14 day temperature probability outlook is now out. This carries us from December 14-20 (we'll be able to start loosely sampling Christmas next week). The vibe features a rather strong lean toward warmer-than-average temperatures for many, a sharp contrast to the current chill.

I just found out that around 20% of the neanderthal genome still exists today in living people! No individual person has more than 3% but we don't all have the same bits. If you add up all the bits we've found, about a fifth of the Neanderthal genome is still present today.

This is AI, and another reason people should learn basic geology and be able to recognise that these rock layers make no sense. Nature is amazing enough, if not wilder than your wildest dreams, all on its own.
