Great (and scary) visualization of 2024 daily temperatures compared to prior years by the BBC today. Evocative of the iconic Joy Division album cover from 1979: bbc.com/news/articles/…

The global numbers are out and 2024 was the world's warmest year since records began in 1850. Global surface temperature was 2.32°F (1.29°C) above the 20th-century average. The 10 warmest years since 1850 have all occurred in the past decade.

Are you at #AGU24? Bring your inner child and play in the sand at Booth #912! Our augmented reality sandbox lets you shape real sand and watch it come alive - It's like being a kid again, except your sand now has contour lines and elevation data. Come by and play!

The new 8-14 day temperature probability outlook is now out. This carries us from December 14-20 (we'll be able to start loosely sampling Christmas next week). The vibe features a rather strong lean toward warmer-than-average temperatures for many, a sharp contrast to the current chill.

I just found out that around 20% of the neanderthal genome still exists today in living people! No individual person has more than 3% but we don't all have the same bits. If you add up all the bits we've found, about a fifth of the Neanderthal genome is still present today.

This is AI, and another reason people should learn basic geology and be able to recognise that these rock layers make no sense. Nature is amazing enough, if not wilder than your wildest dreams, all on its own.

#DroughtMonitor 12/2: The East generally saw conditions worsen. VA/NC are now almost entirely in #drought. Same for the Northeast except interior NY. OH/WV improved. Mixed conditions for most other regions. #Drought2024's Footprint: 36.4% of USA drought.gov @NOAA

While we're still a few weeks away from the winter solstice (December 21), our sunsets actually "bottom out" well before that date. In fact, for many of you, sunsets will actually start gradually increasing again about a week from now!

HERE WE GO! A "Severe" G4 geomagnetic storm is in the forecast Thursday night. This is quite the rare event and has at least a shot at reaching G5 levels. These events are like snowflakes, no two are the same. With that in mind, the below map is a loose representation of what G4 storms are capable of from a viewing perspective. More to come!
