So here goes: South Indian movies in Canada do not release as widely as it should due to a presence of a criminal movie cartel. This cartel includes some GTA theatres, distributors and sales people in major distribution firms outside of Canada. If you are lamenting why your favourite movie is not playing in a Cineplex or Landmark or in your city, it is because of this cartel. Read on to know more.
So how did we get here:
Towards the end of 2015, random vandalism incidents started happening in Cineplex targeting the Tamil movies. Cineplex had been playing Tamil movies for a long time before then, and they continued to play them inspite of these attacks. The initial incidents were screen slashing incidents, and then it was upgraded to pepper spray or bear spray attacks within the auditorium. Cineplex continued to play Tamil movies inspite of these attacks, until a massive bear spray attack happened that targeted multiple locations, targeting their employees and a kids birthday party within Cineplex. The movie was Theri.
After that, Cineplex decided to stop playing Tamil movies and the attacks on them magically stopped.
Since then, Tamil movies have come only in certain theatres in the GTA. The objective was achieved.
Since then, if a distributor outside the cartel purchased a Tamil movie, the cartel theatres ensured that they didn’t play the movie, and any theatre that played that movie was vandalized. This ensured that distributors outside of the cartel didn’t dare take a Tamil movie without risking huge financial loss.
Once Tamil movies came under their control, the cartel next focused on Telugu movies. For that, their target was Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy in 2019. They did a similar attack against Landmark Theatres, and ensured that Landmark/Cineplex never played these movies in the GTA anymore.
Next up was Malayalam movies. Kurup was the first Malayalam movie that played outside the cartel theatres in GTA. By day 4, the screens were slashed and the screenings were stopped. After that, out of precaution, Malayalam movies were not accepted by Cineplex and Landmark theatres, until Thallumala opened widely in both Cineplex and Landmark.
These vandalism attacks, while they seem random, are actually very targeted. They are aimed to send a message to the Cineplex and Landmark film buyers to not play South Indian movies. The attacks happen exclusively against Cineplex or Landmark, right before a big movie is supposed to come or they happen against theatres that dare show South Indian movies, in order to inflict financial damage on them.

Pre pandemic, this was happening only in GTA because the cartel theatres are based out of the GTA. But recently the attacks have spread out west, and now Tamil or Telugu movies do not play in Cineplex and Landmark anywhere in the country, robbing movie lovers of the choice to watch movies in their neighbourhood theatres and at affordable prices.
Next, we will detail how these guys are able to get away with such organized crime in a country like Canada.
Stay tuned.
