It has been the privilege of my life to serve as the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
The economy today is stronger, fairer and more resilient because of the choices we have taken as a Labour Government over the past two years.
Stability restored, investment delivered and reform to our economy under way. I said when I was appointed Chancellor that I would judge my time in office if the lives ordinary working class people have been improved. I’m proud to say that they have.
And to every young woman and girl let my time in office show there should be no ceilings on your ambitions, your hopes or your dreams.
I wish the very best of luck to my successor, Andy and his cabinet. You have my full support, and I will continue to play my part in helping this Labour government deliver the change the country needs.

A man is complaining that Wetherspoons told him he couldn’t use the women’s toilets after two women informed staff they were uncomfortable with him being in there.
Apparently, women are expected to be perfectly comfortable with a man being in, and taking photos in, the ladies’ toilets.
Not a word about the women who no longer felt safe or comfortable because he was there. Plenty, though, about his own “safety” and “comfort” if he had to use the men’s.
Well done, Wetherspoons.

@LBC @theJeremyVine I think she was a truly horrible woman and I won't lie I was not sad in anyway that she died and the fact that so many people celebrated her death is quite frankly on her. However celebrating a murder is a completely different kettle of fish and people doing that are vile

'I've shut down my socials today because I mustn't engage with that rubbish.'
@theJeremyVine reacts to the 'beyond devastating' death of Ann Widdecombe and condemns the 'light-hearted' comments that have followed.

@zarahsultana You don’t get to tell folk what they are allowed to say chunt.

AN APOLOGY
I was seriously wrong and insensitive in one of the several media appearances I made yesterday in reaction to the death of Ann Widdecombe. I got the timing and tone of my initial word portrait of her wrong.
Of course I shared, and share, the horror at her murder and the respect for her remarkable and feisty political career. I also know that many people loved her for her subsequent showbiz stardom. Her untimely death is a horrible thing.
My mistaken view was that in the context of rolling news coverage, I was being asked to contribute as an obituarist who has known her and interacted with her since the 1980s. This approach was premature. At no point was I expressing my personal feelings about her, that's not what I do. I was discussing her life in the round, based on the record of known facts and what she has said about herself, along with some recollections of our personal interactions. My choice of words on the spur of the moment was clumsy. I did not intend to offend though obviously I did.

@jongaunt @PeterTatchell He only apologised for his own self preservation. He showed his true colours with his first statement
English

I see @PeterTatchell has apologised for his crass and insensitive tweet about Ann. But is that enough ?
English

@adamboultonTABB What a poor excuse for a human being you are
English

Always nice to hear from you. I disagree with your conclusions.

You are a deeply disturbed individual @supertanskiii
I pity you.
But I can guarantee she won’t be going to hell.
You on the other hand….

English

@PeterTatchell @DPJHodges You walk side by side on a Saturday with men that would hang gay men like you and me off a crane and yet you consider those people to be worthy of your support whilst slagging off a dead woman
You are a vile hypocrite
English
