The new commemorative 250th anniversary US passport doubles as Trump merch. More potentate than President….

An editor friend texts me: "So on the day Trump adds his photo to passports, his DOJ indicts one of his top enemies over seashells and the FCC goes after a comedian for being mean. Amazing. I don't think Trump learned the lesson of free speech from the dinner."

You have got to be kidding me. The State Department is putting Donald Trump’s scowling face on the U.S. passport. His signature in gold. Superimposed over the Declaration of Independence, a document literally written to get away from this exact behavior. No sitting president has ever done this. Coins, park passes, battleships, and now your passport. The man cannot find a surface he will not slap his name or face on. This is not patriotism. It is vanity.

Significant geopolitical shockwaves from the Iran War.. UAE, which was a member of OPEC, even before the country formally existed, has quit OPEC immediately. UAE has been the second largest holder of spare capacity in OPEC. Longstanding aim to grow production well beyond its 3m bpd quota to its capacity of closer to 5m bpd… (although right now it’s below 2m bpd). In many ways UAE sacrificed greatest proportion of its capacity to keep close to OPEC quotas. Emiratis have options on bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, as it geographically has sea access/ ports on either side, and there will be moves to expand the capacity of pipelines into Fujairah… indeed longer term, that could become an option for other Gulf nations too… As for OPEC, this is a big blow, amid significant questions. Its not just that the UAE, when it can get its oil fully back on the market by sea or pipeline is likely to target 5m bpd production, Saudi might respond with a price war that the UAEs more diversified economy could withstand, but others might not. While the world understandably focusses on oil at $110 per barrel, this is a reason why we should not discount the chance that it could be half that some time next year, depending on the Iran-US talks and the state of the Strait. Chart via @IEA (dark blue is UAE spare capacity)

In the middle of the King's state visit, at the most sensitive time in the special relationship for decades, the new UK ambassador tells something to schoolkids he wouldn't say in public - and gets caught Christian Turner said that America’s only “special relationship” is “probably Israel”, not the UK, and said the phrase is “quite nostalgic, it’s quite backwards-looking, and it has a lot of baggage about it”. “I think there is probably one country that has a special relationship with the United States — and that is probably Israel.” Read the FT scoop ft.com/content/d4bfac…

The Hilton donated the ~2600 dinners that went unserved at WHCD. They freeze dried the steak and lobster for longer shelf life before giving them to 2 shelters for abused women and children. HUGE thank you to the staff that worked through the night under terrible circumstances.

In other news, we’re really going it alone in Iran
MeidasTouch@MeidasTouch

German Chancellor Merz: It is quite obvious that the Americans have absolutely no coherent strategy whatsoever. And the fundamental problem with these kinds of conflicts is always the same: it is not enough to simply get yourself in—you must also figure out how to get yourself out. We witnessed that reality quite painfully in Afghanistan over the course of 20 long years. We saw the exact same thing happen in Iraq. So this entire situation, as I have mentioned previously, is at the very least ill-considered. I do not see, at this present moment, what strategic exit the Americans are choosing—especially since the Iranians are either negotiating very skillfully, or just as effectively, refusing to negotiate at all. Making the Americans travel to Islamabad and then leave empty-handed—there is a sense that a whole nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, particularly the Revolutionary Guards. As Europeans, we have extended an offer to assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz once hostilities come to an end. We have also offered to deploy specialized minesweepers from Germany to clear the strait, which appears to have been mined. But first, the fighting must stop. And right now, I do not see how that is achievable in the short term. The Iranians are proving stronger than initially expected, and the Americans do not appear to have a convincing or coherent strategy for negotiations. This is a complex and very difficult situation. Channel 4 News
Channel 4 News@Channel4News·
Channel 4 News has uncovered that the King’s private estate tried to sell land contaminated with toxic illegal waste in Wigan to the local council. In January, Channel 4 News revealed the 25,000-ton site, dubbed UK’s “most dangerous illegal waste dump”, was on land largely owned by the Duchy of Lancaster - the King’s extensive private portfolio of properties and estates. When approached by the programme the Duchy of Lancaster said it had offered to transfer the land to the council last year - however, correspondence obtained via a Freedom of Information request reveals it actually tried to sell the site at full market price. Wigan Council told Channel 4 News it “respectfully declined” the Duchy’s offer. The Duchy told us today "We continue to work with Wigan Council to try and find an effective resolution to the illegal waste site."

AOC says we shouldn’t be using taxpayer money to build Trump’s ornate castle/ballroom while people are struggling to pay for healthcare and rent. Raju: Would you support authorizing the new ballroom? AOC: No. The president demolished the East Wing of the White House, a historic jewel of the American people, and he started to build this ballroom long before any incident. He also promised the American people that this was going to be built with private dollars, so the idea that they are trying to change the rationale for this doesn’t add up. The White House long had facilities for hosting, which also included the East Wing of the White House prior to them bulldozing the crown jewel of the American people. I don’t believe, in an era when they are jacking up costs, when they’re gutting everyone’s healthcare, and when people cannot afford their rent and their mortgages, that we should be using our treasure to build an ornate castle on a scale that is unprecedented and unbelievable. I’m sure that anybody who is against waste, fraud, and abuse would agree with me on that.
