@Roger64978989 @johnaholeotoole That is pretty different from what what you said - speaking putonghua 'well'. A lot of people don't speak it well, they got accents, dialects, etc. But that does not imply one's education background or social status. Check this in the south.

@langstonlov @johnaholeotoole Speaking mandarin with local accent is common and no bother, but those who refuse to switch to putonghua when talking to outsiders are either arrogant or annoying hence the impression of ill educated. In mainland, you simplely can't pretend you don't understand putonghua, period.

Would appreciate your thoughts on the speaking of Mandarin while in Hong Kong. I'm aware that many residents do not speak it. I'm interested more in their emotions when they hear it spoken to them.

@johnaholeotoole Personally I would recommend speaking English. It's not about superiority or whatsoever. It's about respecting local culture. Speaking Mandarin to Cantonese-speaking people = Assuming they were educated in a Mandarin environment = Giving them more trouble comprehending you
