It sits at 1,088 meters on a mountain in Hokkaido, part of Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, about 90 minutes by train from New Chitose Airport. The gondola opens at 5 a.m., while the sky is still dark. Thirteen minutes later, you step out onto a three-story wooden deck and wait for the sun. On the right morning, the entire valley below fills with cloud. The peaks of the Hidaka Mountains rise out of it like islands. The sunrise turns the whole sea pink, then gold, then white. It happens about 40 percent of mornings between May and October. The resort forecasts the probability every evening, so you know your odds before you set the alarm. For 2026, the season opens May 13 and runs to October 13. Adult gondola ticket: 2,500 yen. Resort guests ride for free. New this year: reservations are required for gondola time slots. The resort added this to reduce crowding, so early booking matters. Beyond the main deck, seven smaller viewing platforms are scattered along the mountain paths. One is a curved mirror frame with a floating bench. One is a bar built into the cliff. The project is called Cloud 9, from the English expression. If the clouds do not come that morning, you still get the Hidaka range at sunrise, an empty mountain, and coffee in the cold air at 1,088 meters. Set your alarm for 3:30 a.m. The mountain owes you nothing. Go anyway.
