🌍21 years ago today, the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) entered into force. Negotiated under @WHO and adopted in 2003, it became the first global public health treaty — and one of the most widely embraced UN treaties in history. #FCTC21 @FCTCofficial

The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control is the 1st ever public health treaty negotiated under the auspices of @WHO with 183 Parties to the Convention covering 90% of the global 🗺️population. The treaty provides a legal framework and a comprehensive package of evidence-based tobacco control measures underpinned by international law that have saved millions of lives including: ☠️large pictorial health warnings on cigarette packages 🚭smoke free laws and 📈increased taxes on tobacco products, among many others. At #COP10, a decision was made to re-establish an Expert Group on liability under Article 19 of the WHO FCTC. This week, the Expert Group on the Implementation of Article 19 is convening.
