Chaucer's characters are still types. They don't deliberate internally, not in the way that Shakespeare's characters often do. Bloom was correct: There is a "before" and an "after" with Shakespeare, and the difference between these two is drastic enough that we in the "after" have tremendous difficulty even imagining our ancestors in the "before."

yes, something like that. you have to be very biased to not be in absolute awe of Chaucer's portraiture ----humanity as idiosyncratic & individual as subjects in Bruegel, Hals, Rembrandt.

@JoyceCarolOates Did he think people weren't human before 16th century England

@JoyceCarolOates Disagree that Chaucer is that hard to pick up … but I’ll say that another good entry is to read Patience Agbabi’s wonderful Telling Tales which brings the Canterbury Tales alive in a modern idiom and inspires a desire to jump into the Middle English 👍🏼

but you have to read Chaucer in Middle English!--that will take some preparation & commitment. the best way to approach Chaucer is to take a course with a devoted Chaucerian. they are in a class by themselves & will make you fall in love with "The Canterbury Tales." not sure that anyone can just pick up Chaucer & start reading... some great works, like "Ulysses" also, are terrific in a group led by someone who knows the work well. otherwise, you may be in a boat with no oars, just aimlessly gliding past a beautiful landscape, & very likely the boat will overturn. end of adventure.

@JoyceCarolOates I'm in a classics book discussion group. We're talking about books for next year. I want to suggest Chaucer though I'm a bit timid--they may have already read it, while I read only a few bits in 12th grade.

Hot off the presses! It's the 300th anniversary of James Hutton's birth. The guy who first truly grasped that the Earth was old, the founder of modern geology, one of Scotland's heroes. And Anne has written a children's book about him! Order details below⤵️

🚨New dinosaur! The latest salvo in the Spinosaurus saga. A Spinosaurus looking like Elvis, with an outrageous bony head crest. Discovered in the Sahara by my undergrad mentor Paul Sereno & his team. Super cool! But I'm sure nobody on the internet will care about it... 😉

Discrimination based on immutable characteristics was as wrong in the antebellum south as it is today. I assume you vote Dem (BlueSky in profile + Brown U) and would ask you to reconsider voting for the group that explicitly wants to discriminate against you. See who the 6 were and who the 3 were in the 6-3 SFFA vs Harvard decision if you don't believe my point about discrimination by political party. I'm not asking you to vote Republican, I'm asking you to consider not voting Dem.

Since it’s Mellon Foundation day on twitter, here’s my Mellon story. By far the scariest and most antagonistic interview I ever had was at the foundation’s office in New York. They very pointedly did not tell me beforehand who would be interviewing me for the fellowship.

Hey @DrAllyLouks you got your first shout out by a student in my seminar on Derek Jarman today. Great sniffing cuttings scene in The Last of England. Then we watched the Smiths and Wang Chung 👍🏼
