Leaving Tech

@leaving_tech

20+ years as a software engineer & manager. Now escaping corporate tech: burnout, layoffs, AI anxiety, interview circus. Who's with me?

The software engineering interview circus is officially out of control. 2000 (how I found my first dev job): - Do you know Java and SQL? - No just basic HTML - Start on Monday 2019: - Recruiter and manager calls - 2 hour take home exercise - System design interview (for senior roles) - Offer 2026: - AI filters and LeetCode Medium - 8-12 hour take home project - 5 rounds of team and culture panels - System design and AI interviews - Leadership presentation case - Ghosted

@leaving_tech Yeah maybe check your account analytics and if you’re averaging over 100/day id Recc slowing down. Also, make sure to verify your email + add 2FA (this also builds algo trust).

I started this account less than a week ago and have already generated ~50k impressions. (This is while being shadowbanned for 2 of those days) For new accounts, the only lever you can pull on for growth is reply-guying. It's a trick as old as time, but when the algorithm won't push your content, you need to rely on poaching from accounts that are getting pushed. New X accounts need to build "trust" with the algo before their posts will get reach. The best way to do that is by getting mentions, likes, and bookmarks on your replies (this shows the algorithm that you're not a bot and that people like you). Once you build to ~1000 followers, you should start seeing reach on your own posts. TLDR: new accounts should put little to no effort into their own posts, and put all their "account bandwidth" into replies.

@BuildurBrand_io Great to know. I'm also replying too much these initial days when I think I can add value. But should slow down a bit.

@leaving_tech Yeah, don't expect your posts to get a push until you're at ~1,000+ followers. Shadowbanned for too many replies. The sweet spot is 20-60/day. (over 100 will likely get you shadowbanned like it did me - just look at the two days of nearly 0 impressions)

@TicTocTick Job platforms are much useful in a job market driven by AI layoffs and with no signs of improvement. Yes, recession is coming.

LinkedIn to lay off 5% of staff. People who give jobs don’t have any jobs. Recession indicator. Confirmed.

LAYOFF ALERT: LinkedIn 🚨 Sometimes the rumors you see on the timeline are true. @JoinBlind has this yesterday. Microsoft's LinkedIn just laid off 5% of staff. About 875 jobs. This is on the heels of Microsoft's layoffs. CEO Dan Shapero's first move, three weeks into the job.

Most people won't buy from you. That's the hard truth I learned on X. You just need the right people to say yes.

100 followers in 5 days! 🎊 😊 I didn't expect that when I started this account to just share my random thoughts about the tech industry. Thank you, all. I'm not leaving X.

I spent my life searching for my greatest strength and it only took a few days on X to find it. My greatest strength is not software engineering or management. It is giving the raw truth that most people are too scared to face. The hard answers about tech, life and money that nobody likes to hear. Twenty years of corporate trauma finally paid off. Most of you are not ready for what I have to say but I am going to say it anyway.

My wildest dream is to quit my job on the spot. Then I wake up and see my bills and the urge disappears. The system is designed to keep you just wealthy enough to stay but too broke to walk away. It is a trap and we are all pretending to be happy in it.

@BacLeodiv Not sure why they call it 9-5 because I haven't seen any employee leaving at 5pm. It's usually like 6 or 7, at least.

No way, I just found out a ‘9–5 job’ means 9am to 5pm, not 9 hours a day, 5 days a week :)

Business is actually simple. You don't need a website, a logo, or a rebrand. You need to talk to people. The more hands you shake, the more money you make.
