Oregonian braving the Texas sun. Proud to be an American. Are you a better man today than you were a fortnight ago?

@culturaltutor The more I learn about the Bauhaus school of thought, the more I find it detestable. To view ornamentation as waste, as superfluous, is either heartless or soulless, likely both. Bring back art deco & nouveau, and classical design.

@Cody_Is_Boring Very cool. Will the shared concrete flooring be something to mitigate as well, or is the transfer through it negligible?

Double 2x4 walls with a 1” air gap between them. This helps reduce noise traveling through the walls as vibrations won’t transfer from one wall to another. Also gives more room for insulation.

I've been enamored with tiny structures for a long time, since before I built the tiny house we lived in after I got out of the Army. They can be built quickly and easily by one person, they can super cheap or even almost free depending on what you're using for materials, and in a lot of places you don't need any kind of permit or anything. You're basically just building a playhouse, or a shed. If you have a yard or a bit of land (or a trailer, in our case), you're good to go. They're not feasible for a lot of people or for long term lifestyle, obviously, (by themselves). But they can be incorporated into an organically growing family compound very easily, and that can really move the needle with the false sense of constriction, i.e. if you're going to have a large family you NEED a large house. Not necessarily. Consider starting in a small house, but instead of selling and switching to a big one, just start gradually moving more functions out peripherally as you need to. I used to have an office in the house, but we needed another inside bedroom, but so now I added a workshop across the garden. The older boys have a cabin on the other side they live in. We have one bathroom in our old farmhouse; we're a family of twelve. So we added a composting toilet outhouse and a solar shower. You can often realistically expand your footprint if you need to, without having to totally renovate or rebuild your house or move to a much bigger one. It's easier to modify your rhythms of life as you're growing organically than it is to radically change your setting (especially in the current housing market).

With regard to DIY building your own micro-Shire family compound, it was common practice in the past to build separate kitchen outbuildings away from the main house. These "summer kitchens" kept it from getting too hot in the dwelling back when all the cooking was done with fire.

@AHomelyHouse So glad we have electric stoves now so we don’t have to live like these peasants and their… absolutely beautiful, whimsical outdoor kitchens. 😭

Wisdom teeth and foreskin removal are two of the most evil procedures that have been completely normalized There’s much more to it then what is on the surface, they are highly invasive and borderline mutilation

Apollo 11 used the Unified S-Band transponder, which transmitted microwaves along the s-band range to a series of receivers in the U.S., Spain, and Australia. They transmitted both video and audio as well as telemetry and bio data on the astronauts.

Want to know what Christian nationalism is? It's being ruled by theocrats like Oklahoma state Sen. Dusty Deevers: "If you belittle Christ in the halls of power and blaspheme Him by not ascribing to Him glory and authority over the governments that rest upon His shoulders, the scepter you grasp will become the rod that breaks you. Kiss the Son or face the beating." peoplefor.org/rightwingwatch…
