Gauteng’s tourism economy is collapsing while the rest of the country recovers – and this is killing job creation! 😡 Domestic overnight trips in Gauteng dropped 39.7% in Q1 and 25.8% in Q2 of 2025. Visitor spending fell by nearly R3 billion in just six months. Bed nights plunged by 60.7% in Q2 alone. Meanwhile, provinces like KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo are growing strongly. Mike Moriarty MPL: “These numbers directly contradict the bold promises from Premier Lesufi and MEC Maile. Their programmes have failed, and Gauteng residents are paying the price with lost jobs and opportunities.” The DA would introduce a focused strategy to rebuild Gauteng’s appeal: value-driven short breaks, revitalising business and MICE tourism, promoting local attractions, improving safety around tourism nodes, and supporting SMMEs. Tourism is a major job creator. Gauteng must become a destination people actually want to visit – not just pass through. A DA-led government would turn this around and unlock real economic growth.
