Fifty years ago tomorrow, Gough Whitlam’s Labor Government was dismissed. Gough Whitlam delivered so much for Australians who felt overlooked for too long. Whitlam’s Australia was more modern, more confident and more equal. A new generation with access to university education and affordable healthcare for all. Soon, Old Parliament House will be home to a permanent reminder of everything the Whitlam Government achieved with a new statue of Gough. Australians will be able to stand with Gough and put an arm around the great man’s shoulders. And remind ourselves that if we maintain our enthusiasm, it’s always time.
