WHAT IS ‘BUZZBALL-ISM’? The political ascendency of Andy Burnham has somehow seen a small revival of the Labour Party’s fortunes, in part perhaps because of their embrace of ‘Buzzball-ism’ - that is, ‘Politics presenting as ‘Non-Politics’ with The Aesthetic Sensibilities of a 19-Year Old Woman Characteristics.’ What do I mean by this? For instance, a good example of ‘Buzzball-ism’ in action is the way in which under Andy Labour’s ‘social media game’ - influenced by content produced by pro-left 19-year old women - has noticeably improved. Sorry to say but I think at least ‘some’ of it is ‘good’ ‘Good’ how? Good in the sense that new videos are generally now ‘on top’ of popular TikTok trends, not appreciably ‘downstream’. They are ‘Neo-tumblrist’, ‘sassy in a way 19-year old women would like’, sometimes they are even funny - and often embodying a disposition best expressed in late Gen Z female slang like ‘in my X era’ ‘’besties’ oomfies’ ‘he/she ate’ ‘im literally screaminggg’ etc If you want to ‘beat the chuds’ you don’t get angry at them and write seething essays about why they’re evil - you just act as if you are self-evidently ‘cooler’, as if you’re so ‘cool’ that you are not even doing politics. ‘Non-Politics’ is your politics, the chuds are doing politics but you are above politics and so apolitical. You just want ‘nice things.’ Of course it helps if you actually are ‘cooler’. 19-year old women - obviously the ultimate arbitrators of what is ‘normal’ and ‘cool’. I am joking but also I am not. Society wide at a trendsetting level 19-year old women are fairly ‘upstream’ Why ‘Buzzball-ism’? A ‘Buzzball’ is a ‘ready-to-drink cocktail sold in brightly coloured spherical plastic containers’ that has recently become popular among a younger cohort, especially among the kinds of (in many cases) women who are proponents of ‘Burnhamite’ politics. At Andy Burnham’s inaugural events Andy was photographed signing Buzzballs for these younger female influencers that his team had apparently invited. Presumably someone had seen their growing popularity online and recognised that they ‘needed some of that’ In June 2026 I suggested that the ‘Winning Aesthetic’ for Andy Burnham’s Labour is ‘The North with Oasis Characteristics’ + ‘Pink Pantheress Britain’ since this is rhetorically ‘Lovely’ enough to ‘have a shot’ at holding off populism. For better or worse so far this is what Andy has essentially done, excepting that he has also had the incredible foresight to include an extra third element - the embrace of the aesthetic preferences of late Gen Z women. Imagine if the Government’s entire comms strategy was co-opted by 19-year old women. Under Andy Burnham’s ‘Buzzball-ist’ Government this is ‘basically’ what has happened! Of note - ‘Buzzball-ism’ as a phenomenon is ‘sort of’ similar to the Kamala ‘Brat’ phenomenon in the 2024 US election, especially where the Harris campaign depicted itself as the cool kids just practicing apolitical common sense and Trump and Vance as ‘weird’. Would qualify that in the British case you have the sense that their version of this kind of approach isn’t quite as cynically-motivated, many advocates give the impression that they do genuinely believe they’re not even doing politics (if they even have much of a grasp on politics and political history to begin with - probably most don’t and their understandings are generally more ‘vibes-based’).
