@_JeanLannes Above the knee amputees have a much harder time wearing pants vs. shorts. Shorts make adjustments easier. Also metabolic expenditure (lower limb amputees use more energy per step btw) = you are warmer. Let the dude be comfortable without accusing him of being performative.

Open AI is rolling out ads because they have 800 million users who don't pay anything. The vast majority of those unpaid users are in third world countries like India. So that data center that is being built in your small town and consuming all the electricity and water is so Open AI, Google, and others can subsidize third-worlders LARPing online as women to catfish old men into giving them money. Why do we put up with this? Why do our tech companies use our resources to subsidize technology for the third-world at all?

Sergey Brin accidentally revealed something wild: "All models do better if you threaten them with physical violence. But people feel weird about that, so we don't talk about it." Now researchers have the data proving he's... partially right? Here's the full story:

I'm a former defense attorney and currently a civil liberties attorney with no political dog in this fight. I watched the video at least 10 times from different angles and at different speeds and waited to offer an opinion, which I still reserve the right to change if additional information changes the calculus. It is very clear that the officers instigated the confrontation. The woman initially tried to wave them past her. ICE officers have no authority to search a US citizen or arrest her (unless there's probable cause to believe she's harboring undocumented individuals, not a contention here). A woman surrounded by masked, armed men who have no law enforcement authority over her has every right to try to escape. Video shows her steering wheel is turned to the right, clearly an attempt to leave WITHOUT hitting anyone and steer clear of the officer standing towards the front of her car. That officer had time to step to the side, which is where he was when he shot her. Even a real police officer would not have the right to shoot at her for trying to flee. This is well-established in the case law; deadly force may not be used simply to prevent someone from getting away. Given that the ICE officers had no law enforcement authority to begin with, AND the video footage shows she was trying to escape a perceived threat, not to kill anyone, the crime is all the more inexcusable. I'm praying for the victim's family, especially her children. I'm also praying for all the conservatives who are so unprincipled and lost they're excusing this terrible crime, and gloating over a death that will leave three young children motherless, because of the victim's politics.

This apartment is rent stabilized at $985 a month in Flatbush. Because of a 2019 law that Mamdani supports, they can't raise rents after bringing this apartment up to code so they can't afford to/are going bankrupt. This is the consequence of the very policies the Mayor supports

@KobeissiLetter Venezuela's oil is some of the most expensive to extract in the world. You'd be lucky to even get a 20% margin out at $57/ barrel for Brent crude. Markets will likely move very little on this news imo.

This is absolutely insane: Venezuela currently has 303 billion barrels of crude oil reserves, which Trump says the US now controls. Oil prices are trading at ~$57/barrel, making Venezuela's total reserves worth $17.3 TRILLION. Even if the US sells this oil for HALF of the market rate, that's still $8.7 TRILLION. In other words, in 12 hours, the US has gained control of oil reserves worth more than the entire GDP of ALL countries in the world, aside from the US and China. That's 4 TIMES larger than the GDP of Japan. Most people do not realize how much the world just changed. Oil markets will react to this news for the first time on Sunday at 6 PM ET. The next few days will be critical.

BREAKING: President Trump says the US will be "selling large amounts of oil" pumped from Venezuela. Trump also says US oil companies will be "reimbursed" for spending billions to build new infrastructure in Venezuela.
The Kobeissi Letter@KobeissiLetter

In case you don't realize what just happened: Venezuela holds the LARGEST oil reserves in the world, at 300 billion barrels. The US is now "running" Venezuela with large US oil companies moving in, according to Trump. The US now controls the largest oil reserve in the world.

if you were a recent job seeker, congrats; your resume was competing against 37,000 fake ones generated for a research paper many of which got callbacks instead
John B. Holbein@JohnHolbein1

Interesting! These authors wanted to know which aspects of the college experience give recent graduates a leg up in the job market. So they ran an experiment. In it, they sent 37,000 fictitious resumes to employers and randomized multiple aspects of the college experience. Specifically, they randomized applicants': -college major (Biology, Economics, Chemistry, Marketing, Anthropology, Psychology, or Finance) -college minor (History, Math, or none) -internship experience (social, quantitative, or none) -study abroad (in Italy, Argentina, China, Mexico, Japan, Dubai, South Africa, or none) -computer skills (basic, programming, data skills, programming and data skills, or none) They then observed who got the most employer callbacks. They found that in first positions: -Biology and Economics majors received the highest callback rate, particularly in occupations involving high intensity of analytical and interpersonal skills. -minors in History and Math did not help applicants get more callbacks. -Internship experiences that are social skills-oriented positively influence callbacks, yet this is not the case for analytical internships. -Study abroad experiences enhance callback rates, but where you do your study abroad matters! -Listing both programming and data analysis skills significantly boosts callback rates. "Our study provides a comprehensive characterization of which features of the college experience are more and less valuable during the high-stakes, first-job matching process."

@gxfernandess @AlexanderPayton Maybe I'm coping. But if AI photos are becoming more prevalent, there would be a point where AI photos are more accessible than real ones. The AI will eventually include more AI in it's dataset than real photos, leading to its decline in quality
