I grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. My first exposure to Somalians was in 2005. I was at baseball practice and we were playing a live scrimmage. I was up to bat, and from home plate you could see the parking lot that was situated beyond the right-centerfield fence. Seemingly out of nowhere, I noticed an old minivan careening through the lot at about 40 miles per hour. Play was interrupted by a thundering crash. The van had made impact with a (parked) Jeep Wrangler, and had nearly tipped it over. No fewer than 10 Somalians spilled out of the van, scattering like field mice in every direction, loudly chattering in some grating, shrill manner that allegedly passes as a language. It was one of the most radicalizing moments of my life. I was only 13 but I immediately understood that not all cultures are equal.

The economy is splitting in two. Yesterday I toured a new gym in town charging $500/month. They offer blood work, recovery, and concierge-style fitness, but most people are really paying for exclusivity. They haven’t even opened yet and they’re already 25% sold out. Later that same day, I talked to a family friend who has owned restaurant chains for 25 years. He told me they are seeing the highest rate of declined credit cards at the register they’ve ever seen. Higher than 2008.

I know so many women who tried to go Botox free this last year. Some even making it 8 or 9 months. But most gave in and got it again.

I know my hours and schedule have been brutal, when my first Starbucks order of the day is at 4:33am. Generally I’d go 7-9am. But if I’m going at 430am? That means my hours have been brutal for a duration. And Delta has been Delta’ing over the last 10-14 days…
