@haspelmath Some linguists have been using "community research". Primary and collaborative research can happen in a variety of research settings.

"Fieldwork" is a good term for geology and biology, where we study "fields" etc. But in linguistics, "primary (data) work" or "collaborative work" seems much better. Which term do you prefer?

Friends, I had a whole baby today. He’s perfect and tiny and won’t be making social media appearances, but if you’re interested in following him, DM me and I’ll send you the link to our online photo book which will be set up tomorrow

Doing research involving speech perception and acoustics? This new paper by me and @lingprof reconsidered some commonly used stimuli to show how they can be misinterpreted, misused, and lead to unreliable conclusions. open-access paper⬇️ asa.scitation.org/doi/full/10.11…

@lisa_b_davidson Since you're distinguishing lexical vs prosodic, I'd say lexical-word initial vs prosodic-word initial.

Super nerdy Q, linguists: In writing, I need to distinguish btw phonemes at the start of lexical words & those at the start of prosodic words (can be lexical word medial). Where do the hyphens go? "Lexical word-initial" & "prosodic word-initial"? Or "prosodic-word initial"? Help!

@lisa_b_davidson As someone who was doubly boosted and still contracted Covid, I agree with you about masks. A maskless dude on a flight coughed on me for 2.5 hours; if he'd been masked I might not have gotten so coated with aerosolized Covid spittle. Something even my mask couldn't prevent.

Covid Q: some venues are requiring proof of vax but not masks. I'm 😍 for vax, but is there still a belief that it prevents us from getting Covid right now? I'm just not sure I understand the vax-but-no-mask rationale since the cases might be milder but patrons can sure get it.

@XboxSupport I fixed mine, fully unplugged my TV setup for like 8 minutes or something, came back and plugged it all back it and it fixed it. May not work for everyone but it helped me

@blillehaugen @mixedlinguist @KevinAbroad1 For both "soda/pop" and "firefly/lightning bug", do the same people use both words? (I'm DEFINITELY not a pop user at all. Maybe I've used lightning bug but mostly firefly. But I do use both couch & sofa a lot.)
