Urban librarian. Opinions are my own, not my employer's. Please wear your fucking mask.

@bloodthrstbooks I loved Tamora Pierce’s Emelan series at that age! (I would not start with the Tortall series, it’s for kids a little older.) Please talk with your local children’s librarian though — some of the recommendations you’re getting are definitely not age appropriate 😅

@Piparskeggr @prof_fantasy I loved Valdemar at that age too but if a teacher is going to be handing the book to a student it’s worth noting that the heroine is tortured and raped in Arrow’s Fall.

@prof_fantasy This 67 year old man is a Valdemar (Mercedes Lackey) fan. I'd recommend starting with the Arrows trilogy.

@GeauxReadBooks Green Bone Saga for an epic fantasy vibe (lots of politics, huge cast of characters) in an urban setting, Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch and Edinburgh Nights series by TL Huchu for what I would consider a more standard urban fantasy feel (structured like a murder mystery)

@QEisenacher No problem! (Also, if you’re not locked into a Kindle Unlimited situation, it would be awesome if you put your books into Overdrive Marketplace— we see tremendous circ for indie books in digital!)

But how is everyone getting their books on the shelves of their local public libraries? If I email them, I hear nothing back. Do I have to go in and talk to them in person? Because if so, I might die.

@QEisenacher Some libraries use a vendor called Ingram, which is where we bought your book (my library uses both), some smaller libraries will buy from Amazon — B&T sells pre-processed so bigger libraries tend to use it, smaller libraries will process/catalog on their own!

@lipsticklibby So then how is it turning up in other libraries in the US? I've had readers send me pictures of it in libraries, seen "library book haul" photos on FB and Insta, so... is it a vendor issue in those cases? Or that people requested them there?

@QEisenacher But also in your specific case, your books aren’t available from the big US library vendor (Baker and Taylor) so a library that depends on that vendor just won’t be able to buy them, sadly. (Miss Percy also isn’t available for purchase on Overdrive!)

@QEisenacher This probably isn’t useful for you specifically because I’m in the US, but at least at my own institution, we’re much more likely to respond to a request from a patron who wants to read the book, rather than an author. If a reader asks, we know there’s local demand!

If, say, someone - possibly me - wanted to read some romance, but has not read a ton of it before, where would one start? One who prefers stuff gay and smutty but really just wants any excellent examples of a genre one is sad to know relatively little about?
