Miyako is a female Asian Elephant ‘living’ in ‘solitary confinement’ for over 50 years at the Utsunomiya Zoo in Japan, where she was brought as a 6-month-old calf from Thailand. She lives in a small, barren, and dangerous concrete enclosure, exhibiting signs of distress like bar-biting and reduced physical health.  Animal rights groups like have advocated for her transfer to a sanctuary, but the zoo has refused.
