@aliciaandrz Married 35 years here. It's such a seasonal ebb and flow. I write every day, documenting the most minuscule moments we have during flow season and print them all off on our anniversary (and I go to them during ebbing seasons). The stories keep us tethered to a deeper love.

I wish we talked more abt the difficult, shameful parts of marriage. the periods of distance, betrayals of trust, bad fights. & also the coming back together. but I just don’t hear much abt what couples who stay together have to fight through to make it happen.

I miss Donald Graves: "Write yourself. Invite children to do something you're already doing... You can't ask someone to sing a duet with you until you know the tune yourself." Oh, how I miss writing with students every day - demonstrating, nudging, questioning, exploring.

@MarcusLuther6 I’m reading @AdamMGrant’s book Hidden Potential and he brings up a study that shows how character skill training can have a dramatic impact vrs cognitive skills training. I think his work here can offer us ways to train for what our students need.

Watching this little one discover the appearance of a slide and swing set in her backyard is such a joy. But it’s not even the best part of the video. For me it’s all about the opening seconds. As she approaches the back door, an inflatable beach ball blocks her path. She picks it up to relocate it and earnestly begs the ball’s forgiveness: “Excuse me, ball.” 😀 While obviously overextended to an inanimate object, this courteous interaction speaks volumes about our hero’s budding social-emotional competence and the environment her family has created. Did you know that longitudinal research suggests that kindergartners with high levels of social-emotional competence (relationship skills, social awareness, self-management, etc.) are measured as having improved outcomes as adults across a variety of domains (education, employment, criminal activity, substance use, and mental health)? How do young children develop courtesy? Empathy? Social skills? They absorb the examples that are modeled by the significant adults in their lives. Never forget the influence you have on your child in your day-to-day interactions. Or as Robert Fulgham noted: “Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you.” This little one obviously has some terrific role models. This delightful video was posted to IG by christina_pax_.

I hate doing this, but I am desperate for sales, as currently a few hundred pounds short of being able to cover my bills this month. Please, if you’ve ever thought about buying from me, now would be a great time. Even if all you can do is retweet this, I’d be so grateful (1/2)

@aliciaandrz @AcademicChatter @Momademia @OpenAcademics Alicia, I've done some research/teaching on writing for life support and would love to offer you a chapter on who writing can be an anchor and a buoy for keeping yourself above water, not only as an educator but as a human being.

When I was a building principal, we had a group of boys who were consistently getting office referrals during lunch for aggressive and disruptive behaviors. In the past, these behaviors had led to increasingly severe consequences that did not reduce the negative behaviors (and caused some students to be sent home and to miss instruction). I sat down with the group and we worked together to come up with a plan on what to do during lunch. One of the boys asked if we could start a knitting club, since his Auntie had recently taught him how to knit. Since he was a leader of the group, the other boys agreed. I asked them to come back tomorrow with some ideas of what to knit. The next day one of the boys said that he wanted to knit little hats for the preemies at the hospital, since his little cousin was there and that a nurse mentioned that they had run out of the little hats. The boys knitted daily and we delivered the hats to the hospital. We received many heartfelt thank you notes from families, nurses and doctors (and even an in-person visit with a personal thank you and cookies from a newborn's mom). This group continued to grow as did our ability to create knitted hats for preemies. This became a huge success for the participating students. There was significant improvement in the students’ behavior, attitude, achievement, and attendance. It is so important to think outside of the box for “win-win” solutions. It really isn’t the WHAT you do that is important, it is the WHY you are doing it! Our knitting group become a team, family, and community. #maslowbeforebloom

I have a new lyric poem about my med work, a kind of love poem in many ways, in the full glossy issue of Poetry East alongside former US poet Laureates Billy Collins and Ted Kooser. Also Alice Friman, Judith Harris, Maura Stanton, Matthew Murrey, and so much more. My poem:

@GabrielleBates I do this very thing. Even if those words never find a home in something I’ve written, the pleasure of having savored them and for my hands to scribe them so my eyes can take them in again is enough for me. 💕

I am never happier than when I’m transcribing my favorite quotes from a philosophical text into my oversized blue Italian notebook & then typing up my favorite quotes from that notebook into a Google doc dreaming toward essayettes/lectures I will likely never actually create
