"When a student knows that you care about them, when they know that you're a human, their academic performance is going to be better." That's the power of relationships in schools. 🫶

@sage_stage @Only_one_thomas And at my school they have a policy that they will not move student out until an action plan is followed. But no, they move them before they even do Step 1, talk to teacher and create action plan for student to follow first.

@Only_one_thomas Did not hear a word about it until after the change was made. She got a D in my class, but has failed about half her classes that's she stayed in. So I don't think it's a grade thing. Ironically, none of the students in my "top ten" ever seem to get taken out of the class

Student is pulled from my class because she's "not getting along with me" On the one hand, one less student and one less distraction in class. On the other hand, they didn't even attempt to encourage her to come to class on time, stay off her phone and to do her work.

@norchcity You should see the gum underneath the tables!!! I had to clean up some computer cables so custodians can wax the floors and forget about it. The amount of gum I saw, gross.

WHY ARE TEACHERS LEAVING THE PROFESSION? •Inadequate preparation for new teachers •Lack of support •Class sizes •Low salaries •Lunch & prep times are too short •Better opportunities elsewhere •Student behaviors with inadequate consequences MUST DO BETTER! #EdChat

So, after the insults & misogyny thrown at me by the so-called educ consultant, Gerry Diamond, he's now blocked me for a 2nd time. He's incapable of engaging in any debate & of accepting that laughing at a dead HT is disgraceful. He should be stopped from going into any school.

@RAD_is_awesome In the event the students did absolutely no work, it is imperative you create an entirely NEW packet of assignments that can be accepted during the final grade process.

Remember, any student receiving a final grade lower than their Q1 grade must include documentation of parental contacts, a student improvement plan, and the interventions you used to ensure the student's success.

@Scienergetic You do know there are still plenty of dedicated students who care, right!!! Let’s stop focusing on those that are not and continue to spend our energy and soul on those that are!!! And stop bitching in social media while we are at it!!!

@KKNTeachLearn Teaching gets easier with more experience. Now dealing with kids that terrorize and Admin does little to nothing, that’s a different story.

@msmtchnk And I hate to put it this way, but don’t live to work. Don’t work yourself to death. This place will replace you in a heartbeat. So find ways to put yourself first!!!

@msmtchnk Coping mechanisms that work for you. What are they? No one size fits all so not easy to tell you. But examples are learning to work your pay rate and your contract hours. Does not get done? Walls are not going to crumble

Teacher friends, I need advice. 🧵🧵🧵 I'm starting to seriously consider whether teaching is the right field of work for me anymore. Every day, I come home burnt out, frustrated by all manner of folks: students, coworkers, family members. All for different reasons. 1/n

@DrBradJohnson But it is very hard when principals have become dictators and their words are insults to our professionalism. Then what?

Effective teachers don't focus so much on rules, but more on relationships, routines, & expectations. If you focus mainly on rules, you will spend most of the year enforcing them. But if you focus on relationships, routines, & expectations, you rarely have to defer back to rules.

Learning is voluntary. That’s a sobering thought when you consider it. So the goal is to create a classroom environment where the students think the learning is worth the effort and worth the risk.

Paul Emerich France, #MakeTeachingSustainable
We can't simply expect teachers to keep working harder and harder without systemic changes. Teachers have a cap on how hard they can work--and after a certain point, we need to make some changes to teaching becomes more sustainable.
