The Empusium by Olga Tokarczuk Tr from #Polish by Antonia Lloyd-Jones Great to see this post doing so well, and prominent copies in bookstores. "Nothing like the incident we have described here ever happened again. The war satisfied our cravings." bit.ly/3Yo5LL3

I hold @jessphillips in the highest regard - a fantastic backbench MP, and now Minister, and a powerful advocate for the safety and rights of women and children. The attacks on her are baseless, shabby and misogynistic.

'The Reading Group.' (c1902) Pekka Holonen is little-known outside his native Finland. His major achievement was recording the national way of life in the late 19thC and the early part of the 20thC where he focused on cultural traditions, folklore, and literature.

Jewish girl Tzesia Rozenberg was born in Katowice in 1938. In 1942, she was killed in Auschwitz. A premature, unfair and incomprehensible death that suffered as many as 1.5 million Jewish children that were murdered during the Holocaust.

Despite all of the challenges - legal and meteorological - we did it! After 40 years of damaging deregulation, Greater Manchester has this morning successfully retaken control of the whole of its bus network. 🙌🏻

Fins start to learn from age 6 years to think critically, differentiate fact from fiction, identify scams, detect misinformation. Our school curricula need updating for the 21st century. Without truth there is no trust. Without trust, there is no society. #education #school

While we’re banning books… Finland is teaching children in school how to recognize fake news and propaganda as part of critical thinking and civic responsibility. Some of this will seem very familiar. Be. Like. Finland.

We at @amnesty are extremely concerned over the fate & wellbeing of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan hospital who was detained by Israeli forces along with others during a raid on the hospital on 27 December. He must be released immediately and unconditionally. For months Dr. Abu Safiya has been the voice of Gaza’s decimated health sector, appealing for the protection of his hospital and working under inhumane conditions, including following the killing of his son. The raid, the latest in a series of attacks on healthcare facilities in North Gaza over the past two months, put Kamal Adwan, the last remaining major hospital in the area, out of service. Since the beginning of its genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, Israel has detained hundreds of Palestinian healthcare workers from Gaza without charge or trial. Health workers have been subjected to torture and other ill-treatment and been held in incommunicado detention. Israel must immediately release all Palestinians arbitrarily detained, including health workers. Hospitals and health workers are not targets. The int'l community esp Israel's allies must act to bring an end to Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza #EndGazaGenocide
