Un 25 de mayo de 1991, terminaba la Operación Carlota, la legendaria misión internacionalista en la cual Cuba luchó contra el fin del apartheid de Sudáfrica, se defendió la libertad de Angola y se consiguió la independencia de Namibia. El nombre de la operación rinde tributo a una esclava africana llamada Carlota, quien lideró una rebelión contra esclavistas colonialistas españoles el 5 de noviembre de 1843 en Cuba. Alrededor de 300.000 soldados cubanos apoyaron la lucha anti-imperialista del Movimiento Popular de Liberación de Angola contra las fuerzas imperialistas del apartheid sudafricano y de EEUU, fue una humillación al imperio yanki que jamás olvidará. También otros 50.000 cubanos entre médicos, maestros, ingenieros y científicos, sirvieron en la lucha del pueblo de Angola durante los 16 años que duró la misión internacionalista. Además de defender Angola de la agresión imperialista, Cuba con esta operación militar debilitó y puso fin al apartheid sudafricano, infligiéndole más de 6.000 bajas en la contienda, haciendo que cayese poco después. Sin duda, este fue uno de los actos más heroicos de internacionalismo de la historia, Cuba liberó al mundo del apartheid y ese mundo ni siquiera se lo agradece.
