The standard of the free paper prize competition was the best in recent memory - particularly well done to medical students @loginovic and Timothy Boet Pavel presented on Epidemiology of #OpticNeuritis. Timothy presented on screening for #AxialSpA in HLA-B27 associated #Uveitis.

Sad to hear the passing of Akira Endo who discovered the statins. During his childhood, Akira was inspired by Alexander Fleming and his discovery of Penicillin from fungal mold. Fate would have it, he ended up discovering the second most important medicine of the century in almost the same way as Penicillin was discovered. Except Akira found statins not by luck but through years of painstaking research of fungal molds. Still, serendipity played a small role. Of all the places, he found the billion dollar chemical in the rice bought from a local grocery store in Kyoto. In the words of Nobel laureates Michael S. Brown and Joseph L. Goldstein, "The millions of people whose lives [were and] will be extended through statin therapy owe it all to Akira Endo" #RIP Akira Endo theguardian.com/society/articl…
