@EuropeanNick @StuartShrugged @SimonCalder It's a consequence of brexit not caused by it. That's down to a poorly executed and disjointed introduction of an already outdated entry exit system. As we allow EU nations to use Egate type systems, the EU could do the same with us but choose not to.

@StuartShrugged @SimonCalder It is the fault of Brexit. We know this because countries who chose to remain in the EU do not have this new EES paperwork. The EES is not intended to deal with Brexit. Brexit creates new barriers between the UK and EU. For the UK, the EU is big and near.

EU entry-exit system. The EES was never intended to contend with the British. Most of the “third-country nationals” crossing Schengen frontiers are from the UK. We add too much pressure in too many inadequate border locations. Europe must pause and reflect independent.co.uk/travel/news-an…

When I seize power, I am going to bring back the plastic bits in cotton buds. The cardboard ones are flimsy and have no purchase. We legislated to make everything just that little bit worse, all because swallowed a lie that all our rubbish somehow magically flies out to sea.

@tomhfh This will ultimately change how we consume inflight entertainment. The airlines will no longer need to provide expensive inflight entertainment systems as we will all be watching Netflix on our phones. Win win.

Britain’s electricity is currently 72% zero carbon. We’re defeating the oil barons, petro-state dictators, paid fossil fuel lobbyists, and every right wing grifter on the internet one wind turbine at a time. Cool Britannia is so back…🇬🇧⚡️♻️🔋😎

@MrHarryCole And somehow our ability to export homegrown energy (oil and gas) is bad and we are better off importing it from Norway. Typical left, why let the facts stand in the way of the ideology.

@MatthewStadlen We keep comparing ourselves to our European neighbours, who are performing poorly for the same reasons as us. Look at the US and Asia and see how those countries are growing in comparison and understand the reasons why.

UK GDP grew 1.3% over 2025, according to preliminary estimates (with GDP per head up by 1%). France grew by 0.9% Italy by 0.7% Germany by only 0.4% Unspectacular but encouraging, despite a disappointing final quarter?

@RichardBentall @tomhfh Left wing economists says one thing, right wing another. My US colleagues earn nearly twice as much as me, have lower taxes, bigger houses and more disposable income doing the same job. That’s my life experience. Does the US have everything right, no, but we don’t either.

Some useful perspective from Rishi Sunak: too many lose sight of how poor we are becoming, because our Europoor neighbours are doing even worse.

@ThomasF93619148 @longer100 @tomhfh Not everyone. Top tier salaries significantly pull up national average. Tech and finance are world-leading but federal minimum wage of $7.25 ranks 23rd globally. Est. 530k to 650k US households file for bankruptcy each year due to medical bills or illness-related income loss.

But more than that. Entire websites are now disappearing from the shrinking firewalled British internet. Few will publicly mourn the passing of Pornhub. But the withdrawal of this business from British shores should worry us – not for the loss of its content, but what it represents about zealously over-regulating online life. Isn’t it absurd that the government is moving to make 16 and 17 year olds voting citizens at the same time  as enthusiastically enforcing a law that prevents them from seeing the open internet?

Tube drivers are striking for a 32 hour working week, and 75% discounts on all national rail travel. Their base salary is currently £70,182 pa. For a job so demanding some see fit to knit, watch TV, and occasionally press a button to operate doors.

As ex-Transport, Energy & Defence Sec, I’ve been inundated with media calls all day re: Heathrow. I’ve declined as these things are (90%) cock-up or a fault and (10%) foul play, with terrorism least likely. Better to wait for the facts.
