More Metro lines and local trains will never be enough. Uncontrolled migration is putting unbearable pressure on city’s infrastructure. People can’t keep flooding into one city endlessly while their own states fail to create opportunities. Without serious control Mumbai will continue to choke.

Dear Mr. Vembu,
I write this with deep concern over your recent support for reservation policies and the comparisons you’ve drawn with diversity initiatives in the United States.
You argue that systems like DEI in America justify similar frameworks in India. But this comparison falls apart when we look at the scale and implementation. In the U.S., such policies never translated into a system where 60–70% of opportunities were effectively reserved, nor did they allow massive disparities in merit thresholds for critical professions.
Let me ask a simple question:
What crime have General Category students committed?
Why should a child, from the very beginning of their academic journey, feel like they are at a systemic disadvantage not because of lack of effort, but because of their birth in General Category? Why are their aspirations consistently compressed to accommodate a system that increasingly ignores merit?
You speak of social justice. But is it justice to crush the dreams of one group to uplift another, indefinitely? Is it justice when students scoring significantly lower marks are granted access to highly competitive and critical fields like medicine, while others with far higher scores are left behind?
A nation progresses when it rewards competence, innovation, and excellence. The global dominance of American technology was not built on rigid quotas it was built on merit, competition, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. That is precisely why talent from countries like India migrates there: because systems that reward merit create opportunity.
In contrast, policies that dilute merit risk mediocrity. They push capable individuals away, discourage effort, and ultimately weaken institutions.
India stands at a crucial stage in its development. We cannot afford to compromise on merit in the name of social engineering. True upliftment should come through better education, equal access to resources, and economic empowerment not through perpetual reservation that divides society further.
I urge you to reconsider the broader implications of the stance you are taking. Influential voices like yours shape public discourse. At a time when India needs to build world class institutions, the focus should be on strengthening meritocracy, not weakening it.

People don't seem to realise that American universities have had strong Affirmative Action and Asian American kids (including Indian American kids) need far higher grades and test scores to get into top Universities. This is absolutely true in California even now - even though the law prohibits it and the Universities will deny it! On the other side, Zoho has thrived in Tamil Nadu and both AIADMK (MGR initiated the massive increase in reservation quota in early 1980s in higher education) and DMK have long maintained the same reservation policy here. It is a political non-issue in Tamil Nadu. Zoho has benefited from and has in turn benefited all the communities in Tamil Nadu. When private sector investment is strong (as has been the case in Tamil Nadu) reservation policy in education can help to create a bigger talent pool. When private sector investment is low, society becomes a zero sum game. This is why we must work to boost private sector investment in a big way, rather than fight about reservation. I repeat: Universities in California have very strong Affirmative Action programs too. And California also has had strong private sector investment.

The heat has been brutal this past week. Temperatures hit 45° in Nagpur, 44° in Ahmedabad, 43° in Prayagraj, 42° in Delhi. Even Bengaluru hit 37°. And we're still in April 😬
A big contributing factor behind rising temperatures is the loss of forest cover, and India has lost a lot of it. Back in 2020, we met the team behind Farmers for Forests (F4F). Their idea was to do agroforestry at scale. The challenge is that farmers can't afford to wait years for trees to pay off, and most tree-planting projects don't survive the first monsoon. The idea was ambitious, and we at @RainmatterOrg backed them early.
Most tree-planting in India is monoculture, just rows of one species. But a plantation isn't a forest. F4F plants multi-layer agroforests with fruit, timber, shrubs, intercrops, and native species, trying to mimic what an actual forest does.
Six years later, they've gone from 50 acres to 5,000 acres and have just secured funding to reach 40,000 over the next three years. Compared to traditional crop farming, per acre, they're seeing ~4x carbon sequestration, ~3x farmer income, and meaningful improvement in biodiversity and soil health. Still early days, but promising.
Those numbers needed to be verifiable. So F4F built TreeLens, an open-source tree-tracking system that uses drone imagery to measure carbon sequestration, tree height, and biodiversity across thousands of small farms. 15 other organisations now use it.
The hardest problem in agroforestry is time. Fruit trees take 5 to 7 years to pay off, and most small farmers simply can't wait that long. So F4F is now working with the government and the larger ecosystem to design financial instruments like carbon bonds and first-loss guarantees that protect farmers while the trees grow.
Really glad we backed Arti, Aditya, and Krutika early.
