During my NYSC, I served at OAU, Ife. One professor there became a good mentor. One day he told me, “Don’t come here for your Master’s. Travel abroad. You have the potential. There are greater opportunities out there for you.” I didn’t listen. Instead of pushing with everything it would take, I tried a little… and gave up. Since he told me not to return to OAU, I went to UI instead. Guess what? He was my external examiner for my thesis defense at UI. When he saw me, he said, “The Akungba girl? So this thesis is yours?” He had kept my thesis for last. He said it stood out. It was different. He wanted to discuss it in detail. But when he realized it was mine, he looked at me and said, “I thought I told you to travel. Why are you here?” He was disappointed — not in my work, but in my decision. Before we finished, he said something that stayed with me: “I don’t want to come here and examine you again for PhD. Put in the effort. Go abroad.” This time, I listened. And this time, I gave it everything — the sacrifice, the exams, the discipline, the money, the commitment. And I got the scholarship at last. Here I am. Two PhDs, both completed with full funding without one day of financial lack.🥹 Why didn’t I make it the first time in 2012? Because I avoided the hard parts. I refused to write the required English exams. I didn’t want to take the other standardized tests. I couldn’t afford some application fees.
