Last night, I woke up to the ground shaking beneath me, like an earthquake. The explosion was so violent, I felt every part of my body tremble. The air was thick with smoke and destruction, as if the world was collapsing around me. My heart raced as I tried to make sense of what was happening, but there was only the deafening silence after the blast, a silence that echoed louder than any sound could. This silence is a cruel companion, one that amplifies the feeling of being forgotten, of being ignored in a world that moves on without a second thought. It's a silence that suffocates, that makes you question your existence, your worth, when no one acknowledges the pain you're living through. It's the kind of silence that doesn't just leave you speechless—it leaves you feeling invisible. And in that silence, you are left to wonder if the world even cares. Does it hear the screams of the wounded? Does it feel the anguish of those who are left in the rubble, fighting for a breath, for a future? The cruelty of silence is that it offers no answers, no comfort, no hope. It only deepens the wound. As the dust settles and the world continues on its path, you stand there, knowing that for many, your suffering is nothing more than a fleeting headline or a forgotten news report. And yet, you endure, because despite the silence, your pain is real. The world may ignore it, but it cannot erase it.

The water crisis is intensifying in the #Gaza Strip, with residents standing in long queues from morning until afternoon, waiting for very small amounts of water, and sometimes they don't receive any. @UN @WHO

Euro-Med Monitor@EuroMedHR

In a letter to the foreign ministers of EU member states, Euro-Med Monitor expressed its deep concern over the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, which constitutes genocide under international law. The letter offered insight into the documentation Euro-Med Monitor gathered since October 2023, highlighting the Israeli military assaults, which have resulted in unprecedented civilian casualties, mass displacement, and the near-total destruction of infrastructure. These acts reveal the systematic nature and sheer scale of extreme violence, dehumanisation, and the intentional and widespread targeting of protected populations, as well as efforts to impose permanent demographic changes in the region. Accompanied by the deliberate and sustained denial of resources essential for survival, the infliction of serious bodily and mental harm, and measures aimed at preventing births within the Palestinian population in Gaza, the letter emphasises that these acts meet the legal elements of genocide as defined by international law. The letter underscores that such conclusions are echoed by UN experts, international human rights organisations, and most notably the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which in 2024 found that Israel’s acts in Gaza could plausibly constitute genocide. This finding imposes clear legal obligations on all states, including EU member states, to prevent further crimes and ensure accountability. On 2 March 2025, Israel banned all humanitarian aid and commercial goods, depriving over 2.3 million people, half of whom are children, of their basic needs. Then, on 18 March 2025, Israel resumed its direct campaign of en masse killings. Given that Israel’s genocidal actions have persisted without interruption, including during periods designated as ceasefires, the letter further asserts that what is currently happening in Gaza is not a return to war but an escalation of genocide. The letter highlights that since the resumption of direct attacks in March 2025, Israeli airstrikes have led to a sharp escalation in civilian casualties. Within just 72 hours following 21 March, 591 Palestinians were killed—including over 220 children and 120 women—while more than a thousand others were injured. By 27 March, the number of fatalities had risen to 830, with 1,787 more individuals injured. The letter further asserts that these recent deaths add to an already staggering toll of 58,340 Palestinians killed by January 2025, the majority of whom were women and children. It notes that approximately 116,300 people had been injured by that point, and nearly 80% of Gaza’s infrastructure, buildings, and agricultural land had been destroyed. Since then, the situation has only further deteriorated. The letter highlights the devastating toll on Palestinian children, noting that over 18,000 have been killed and more than 5% orphaned or separated from their parents. Most have been denied access to education, face widespread malnutrition. It also notes that Gaza has the highest rate of limb amputations per capita globally—a horrifying reflection of the ongoing violence inflicted on the entire civilian population trapped in the region. Thus, Euro-Med Monitor called on the EU to adopt urgent and decisive measures, including the imposition of economic, diplomatic, and military sanctions on Israel; suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement; halting all arms transfers; and the enforcement of international accountability mechanisms. It also urged EU states to support the ICJ’s prosecution efforts against Israeli officials and invoke universal jurisdiction to prosecute Israeli nationals implicated in crimes against Palestinians. “It is a matter of choice: will the EU remain silent in the face of such unmatched criminality, acting in stark breach of the values it purports to possess,” Euro-Med Monitor stated in the letter, “or will it take a stance and do what it can to prove to the world that it is in fact an institution that not only preaches the importance of upholding and protecting human rights in the wider world but also practices it?” The letter concluded by stressing that while the amount of destruction and loss of life in Gaza has already progressed to a point of no return, further destruction and death can still be prevented—if only the EU chooses to act.

Gaza’s Christian community expressed deep sorrow over the death of Pope Francis. "We lost a saint who taught us every day how to be brave, how to keep patient and stay strong. We lost a man who fought every day in every direction to protect this small herd of his," said George Antone, head of the emergency committee at the Holy Family Church in Gaza, speaking to Reuters. According to Antone, Francis began calling the church just hours after Israel's war on Gaza started in October 2023, initiating what Vatican News Service described as a nightly tradition. "We know that he is leaving behind a church that cares for us and that knows us by name - every single one of us," Antone said, referring to Gaza’s Christian population, which numbers around 700 according to WAFA. The Pope made his final call on Saturday night, according to Rev. Gabriel Romanelli, the pastor of Holy Family parish, who told the Vatican News Service: "He said he was praying for us, he blessed us, and he thanked us for our prayers."

Pope Francis called for Gaza ceasefire a day before his death A day before his passing, Pope Francis delivered his final Urbi et Orbi message on Easter Sunday, urging an “immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip” and calling the Holy Land “wounded by conflict.” Expressing solidarity with Gaza’s Christian community, he warned that “the terrible conflict continues to cause death and destruction and to create a dramatic and deplorable humanitarian situation.” This was far from his first appeal—throughout his papacy, Francis consistently spoke out for Gaza and Palestine.
