Door to door on a "high speed rail" from a majority of cities in Socal to wherever you need to go in the bay area will take similar total travel times than just driving. It is a dumb project that needs to be cancelled. You could literally just pay for peoples plane tickets for a century for the cost of this retarded boondoggle.

That is exactly right. You’re investing money and you have a return on that capital. So the energy going into my car is free once that capital expenditure is paid off.
It’s a play on words either way, but the point is accurate that you’re receiving way more energy than you would have gotten by relying just on the grid over the lifetime of the solar. Any energy you get after offsetting grid purchases with that same amount of capital could basically be considered free energy.

As I stated, it is a return on capital. And the idea that charging your vehicle from the solar is "free" is absurd. Most solar systems are not sized to handle 100% of household usage and to charge a car. If your solar is not sized for your vehicle than you will be pulling from the grid at $.29/kw in California. If you sized a system to handle average household consumption and 12k miles a year of EV driving you are looking at a 12kw or larger system that will require a battery to optimize TOU rates (in California) A system of this size is nearly $40,000 or more. The ROI of that kind of system will take about 10 years to "break even" and a cash on cash return for 20 years of about 10%. It is similar to the S&P 500. @grok Verify my claim here if I am wrong or missed anything.

Once your solar is paid for you’re basically generating revenue by not having a power bill.
In my case, my electric bill runs about $400 a month without solar. Now that all my solar is paid for that’s $4800 a year that I don’t have to pay in electric bills which can be treated as income from my capital expense from my original solar installation.
Solar is better than free after it’s paid for.
And, because electric rates continue to go up more than I was sold, the payback keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Hi Spazo- Your solar system was not free, therefore the energy is not free. What you are describing is return on invested capital. You didn't perform a magic spell and have a large, expensive solar system appear on your roof. The fact that so many people in this thread literally think their solar is free is just mind boggling. Your solar system has a life span and will need to be replaced. Is that replacement coming free of charge? NO.

I’ve had my solar for 10 years. It was paid off in 6.5 years. Not only is it free to charge my cyber truck and model Y, but I’m actually making money on my investment at this point and will continue to generate revenue for the next 15 years.
The low IQ is not understanding the value of rooftop or ground mount solar at your home.

Many people are scared to get a Tesla because they think they need to spend $5000 or more to install a charger at home. No you don't. I charge my Tesla using a regular 240v outlet in my garage. Same outlet as a dryer. Your local electrician can install one for under $500. Your new Tesla already comes with a mobile connector that plugs right into it. If you want a Tesla Wall Connector, that's $450 and about $500 to install. Get home, plug it in, and by the time you finish making dinner it's fully charged. Charging at home can cost you under $3 a day. No more spending $60 a week on gas. The savings of driving an EV are HUGE and it starts on day one. What's stopping you from making the switch?

However, this is obviously an extreme negotiating tactic to move this situation to a terminus. You can't deal with the Islamic Republic with normal diplomacy.
