@mbeisen I think you are right that it starts with reaching across and talking. You never know, he might be interested. He's had Neil deGrasse Tyson on his show before!

the coming attacks on science are driven primarily by cynicism and ill intent - but a long series of acute and chronic bad decisions have played a meaningful role in the erosion of public trust in scientists, and the path to its restoration has to begin by us cleaning up our act

Just a few weeks left to apply to this Human Genetics position in Berkeley IB! Over the last 7 years IB has hired 12 assistant professors (!including me!) and is an incredibly supportive environment. I can't wait to welcome a new colleague! aprecruit.berkeley.edu/JPF04502

Pleased to announce that my lab at UC Riverside has been awarded an NIH/NIGMS MIRA. This grant will fund our research on the evolution and genetics of recombination rate variation. We are also now recruiting at multiple levels, starting with postdocs (see QT below!).

Come to Recombination Rate Variation Session #Evol2024 Mon July 29, 12:15 in 520B to hear about biology's "spooky action at a distance" 👻 See how inversions alter recombination on other chromosomes! And explore its consequences for deleterious mutation accumulation with SLiM!

@vsbuffalo @jgschraiber I've also had issues subsetting vcfs for example. Some programs replace the reference base based on the new set of individuals which is crazy because the reference should always be the same. Gives headaches for downstream merging!

I bet some bioinformatics results have merge errors caused by bad joins on variant positions — @jgschraiber and I were just discussing this. Why? Because VCF is 1-based, BED is 0-based, GTF/GFF is 1-based, BAM is 0-based, SAM is 1-based. Joins on (chrom, position) key are bad.
Richard McElreath 🐈‍⬛@rlmcelreath

Alphabetical order mismatch and 52 of 78 neighborhoods had wrongly merged data. I spend a lot of time teaching advanced inference methods, but boring research data management remains the most essential skill. And that includes auditing for merge mistakes.
