This thread is an amazing example of the steps that entrepreneurs can take to maintain their well-being while trying to build a company in the face of uncertainty.

@drgurner Truth. Would expert-level be when instinct and head differ, still being able to quickly decide/act with a combination of conviction and humility?

Overriding your "instinct" with your "head," will almost always get you into trouble... It takes time, practice, and a lot of self-trust - but double down on your gut: Professionally & Personally. Forcing an override on instinct is almost always reliably wrong.

@drgurner @garrytan That's a super interesting insight - that the founders who rise are a whole separate sample. Thanks!

@lukedecoste @garrytan I've pieced together my own regulation strategies - there is nothing in the literature you're going to find that is efficient, and it's mostly geared toward clinically diagnosed people, or general entrepreneurs that don't account for some real specifics of founders who rise.

“Focusing” is one of the most valuable techniques I can think of to move beyond the default reactions to any event or problem. Strong emotions should trigger self-aware introspection, not rash action

@garrytan @drgurner This thread is my everything. I'm currently doing a literature review of research on Emotions in Entrepreneurship to identify regulation strategies. Re-appraisal seems to work, suppression doesn't. Distraction does momentarily. No research on body practices like focusing ..yet

Entrepreneurs need to constantly be learning to succeed. When things get tough, their firm's survival depends on learning behavior, but that's exactly when its hardest to do. Emotion regulation helps you learn through the scariest moments.

What's the easiest way for founders to get VC? To have raised VC before! But, in this very cool paper I use in class, @benhallen & Eisenhardt lay out an alternate path for entrepreneurs to get VC that works very well, but is a little more elaborate... 1/7 faculty.london.edu/bhallen/assets…

@jonnym1ller I read an hour of research every day. It keeps me always formulating new approaches & using new knowledge. If you don't make the time to be great at what you do, then maybe don't do it at all. I see it as part of my core job responsibilities & make the time.

Curious who here still manages to carve out upwards of an hour a day for reading? What are your secrets?

@LUrbaniste Great observation. This is common perhaps in many contexts. But it is definitely true in many public services. Movers in NSGov dread the oft used call to authority “well what are they doing in New Brunswick.”

I've noticed a disturbing trend among well-meaning urban planners & designers: they look to other cities to defend why they have accomplished little, rather than seeking inspiration to accomplish more.

We acquired our child's first legos off Kijiji recently. The tub was filled with engines, tires, and angry villains. We then build tributes to petroleum and toxic masculinity. Not necessarily a great foundation for teaching a more compassionate and clean way to live.

If we want to stop being a car-obsessed society, we will have to stop indoctrinating kids with imagery and characters based on fuel combustion. I'm not helping when I excitedly point out unique cars to my kid. I have stopped acquiring books and clothing that idolize such ideas.
