Today in history on May 18th 1291: The last major stronghold of the kingdom of Jerusalem, Acre, fell to the Mamluk Sultanate. Warriors across Christendom amassed a force of about 15,000 with knights from the Hospitallers, Templars, Teutonic Order and more reinforcing the defense. Famed Hospitaller Marshal Matthew of Clermont would also perish on this day in the Genoese quarter, aiding his allies in fleeing to their ships. Very little is known of Matthew and his life before the crusades. However he fought in the Fall of Tripoli in 1289 before escaping by sea. This leads us to 1291 and the fall of Acre. On May 16, Matthew halted fleeing defenders and counter-attacked, driving the Mamluks out through Saint Anthony's Gate. When the Mamluks stormed the city again on May 18, he would stand his ground with his men and fight, dying in battle on the front lines in the Genoese quarter. Grand Master Jean de Villiers spoke about Matthew after the fall of Acre and his sacrifice in a letter to the Grand Master of Provence in 1291 ”He was noble, courageous, and well-versed with arms. May God have mercy on him!”

🙄 Bill Gates affirme que la prochaine pandémie pourrait être « bien plus grave » que la Covid-19. Ce devin qui prédit l’avenir avec une précision troublante et qui semble maîtriser le sujet des virus aurait décidément sa place en prison.
