“Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often called the Black National Anthem, was written by James Weldon Johnson in 1900. By 1919, the NAACP declared it the “Negro national anthem,” and it quickly became a song sung in schools, churches, and communities across the South and eventually throughout the United States. Overton High School for the Creative and Performing Arts choir members Jakayla R., Myla M., and Adriauna H. deliver a rendition that celebrates faith and freedom, carrying forward a tradition that has inspired generations of Americans nationwide.
