A high-profile Stillwater case involving sexual assault charges is back in Oklahoma court this week as one victim says prosecutors didn't properly include her in plea negotiations.
The evidentiary hearing started Monday, April 13, 2026, focusing on whether the district attorney's office followed Oklahoma's Crime Victims Act, known as Marsy's Law.
According to News 9, the teenage victim spent hours on the stand describing her meetings with prosecutors. She said she was basically just told about the deal right before court and didn't get a real chance to have input on the sentencing. Her mother also testified. The victim often got emotional during her account, sources reported.
Jesse Butler, who was a Stillwater High School student at the time, pleaded no contest last year to multiple charges that included (grape)-related offenses involving two teenage victims. He choked one of his victims so violently the child required surgery for a leaking artery.
Butler received youthful offender status and was sentenced to probation along with mandatory counseling and community service instead of any prison time.
Months ago the families of both victims told me prosecutors kept changing their story. Victims were allegedly told Butler would be charged with attempted murder as an adult with multiple medical experts ready to testify he was seconds away from killing one of his victims. But that never happened.
Now they say they were never consulted about the plea deal given to Butler, a violation of Oklahoma law.
Prosecutors told the court they had sat down with the victim and her family to explain that Butler would be handled as a youthful offender and likely take a plea to avoid jail. But the victim claims it didn't feel like she had a voice in how things went down.
The family of one victim filed a federal lawsuit in late December 2025 on behalf of their teenage daughter, who was a student at Stillwater High School. The suit names Stillwater Public Schools, the City of Stillwater, former principal Walter Howell, school resource officer Paul Blankinship, Jesse Butler, and his parents Jacque and Mack Butler as defendants.
The lawsuit alleges the district failed to investigate the reports properly, didn't follow through on a protective order that was served at school, and let contact continue on campus. It also claims Mack Butler, a former Oklahoma State employee in the Football Program, who held a position in the athletic department at the time, used his role to harass or intimidate the victim.
The hearing continues today.
