1) I'm not sure how to make people remember or care that 15 years ago the United States invaded Iraq, setting off a war that continues to this day, with several hundred thousand Iraqis dead, millions turned into refugees. I covered the invasion for the New York Times Magazine.

Lol I thought I was on BlueSky when I posted this. I’m not posting here anymore but I’ll leave this up.

Back in the 1990s, U.S. foreign policy elites looked on the Balkans as stuck in the past, way behind the “civilized” world. Perhaps, however, Serbia etc was/is ahead of us, and we’ll catch up one day soon.

#Serbia 🇷🇸: another crazy day in the parliament as opposition lawmakers lit fireworks in protests of #Vucic's corrupt government.

A reminder, I'm posting on BlueSky, not here, because this place is a cesspool connected, via its apartheid-adjacent owner, to the far-right government in D.C. I'm keeping my account active so that my Iraq and Bosnia content is available to anyone who might be interested.

Not breaking: I'm not really posting here any more, and spend less time reading the conversations thrown at me by the algorithm. Planning to post mostly at the other place, where I'm @maassp.bsky.social.

A year ago, Vox asked five scholars if they considered Israel to be committing genocide in Gaza. One said yes, the others said no. Returning to the same scholars a year later, Vox found that three of those who said no have subsequently changed their mind. vox.com/politics/37891…

"This picture of a child with a ball was taken while I was out walking in the beautiful late afternoon winter light. I just happened upon the scene, capturing the ball being thrown up in the air as if this was any street in the world." -- Paul Lowe

July in Sarajevo with Paul Lowe for the launch of my book with his photo on the cover. Such a loss for so many.

The passing of the great Paul Lowe is a tremendous loss for so many people and for Bosnia. His haunting photos from the siege of Sarajevo are on the covers of the English and Bosnian editions of my book. An inspiring teacher and friend to multitudes, gone way too soon.

On J.D. Vance: "The escaped sons and daughters of poverty don’t need to deride their less fortunate peers to inflate their own self-regard. We need more honesty about how class society itself is violence. " -- Ann Larson & Alissa Quart lithub.com/class-defector…

I have no idea what happened to these children. If they survived Iraq's many years of warfare, they would be in their twenties now. What have their lives been like? Imagine the trauma of this day, add 20 years, multiply by millions of Iraqis.

The Iraq war is passing from America's memory but not mine. I don't know whether we'll ever accept moral & legal responsibility but until a reckoning comes, the truth must be kept alive. Here's what I witnessed 20 years ago today at the Diyala Canal outside Baghdad. (Thread)

@benhaygood @mitchprothero Not really, alas. Long story, I'm trying to make one happen. For now, just the softcover edition, available via the usual book outlets.
