@s0ymalia What is this “making friends is SO hard” propaganda? I live in a B (or maybe even C city), people are super friendly, and it’s easy to connect with them. Join a jiu jitsu gym or a community garden.

The real challenge with B cities isn’t the lack of the MoMA, it’s the fact that unless you’re from there, or you move right after college, everyone’s social circle is basically set to people they grew up with or worked with at 22.
Aaron M. Renn 🇺🇸@aaron_renn

"Solid B cities might not have the MoMA, but they are likely to have good museums, a great brewery scene, a functional bike path, and a minor-league stadium. To live in a place you can afford with a municipal government that works, this hardly seems like a consolation prize."

@petersavodnik I feel like this is a confusing thing to say. A LOT of people would say they hate China the country for its geopolitical actions and but don't hate the Chinese people. This is how most non-Americans seem to feel about America and Americans, no?

Actually, it happens every day. Anti-Zionism is just a manifestation, or extension, of antisemitism; the two are indistinguishable. We wouldn't say, I love the Chinese but hate China, or I love Pakistanis but hate Pakistan -- even though that country, like all countries, is beset with a complicated history, one that necessarily involves winners and losers, nuance, incongruity, war, peace, etc. The people-versus-country dichotomy is reserved for one group only. It is itself a function of the antisemitism. It exists only because we insist on making it. Yes, of course, we wrap our distinction-making in a nicely fitted garb -- one that pretends to care about "settlers" and "colonizers" and "the oppressed" and the plight of Gaza. But the champions of the Gazans seem only to care about them when they can pin their furies on the Jews. When it comes to anyone else -- say, Hamas, which is oppressing lots of Gazans right now -- the champions of the Gazans are suddenly, oddly quiet. Lurking beneath all the self-righteous paeans to the Palestinians is an all too familiar Jew hate. The same Jew hate we have always known. Alas, the natural, the seemingly inevitable, extension of a virulent anti-Zionism is a virulent (and, predictably, violent) antisemitism. It is not at all difficult to imagine so-called progressives in the not too distant future dispensing with the niceties and simply demanding the expulsion of all Zionists -- the vast majority of Jews -- from the United States. It would be unethical, after all, to provide safe haven to these people, to support them (even tacitly), to enable them to work and prosper and make money -- which they, presumably, spend on propping up the Zionist entity. The Jewish state. Hasan knows all this, of course. Perhaps now that his Qatari puppet masters are shifting gears with regard to Iran, he, too, will be instructed to rein it in.
Mehdi Hasan@mehdirhasan

"Jews don't belong in American society." Imagine a sitting member of Congress tweeting that. You can't. Thankfully, it'd never happen. And *if* it did, it'd be the end of their career and the biggest story in America. But Ogles can say this about Muslims without any censure.

@ryanmcmaken I think its not that complicated. Two things are simultaneously true: Darryl is a fantastically talented storyteller and writer. Also, Darryl has trouble discerning fact from fiction. He's very talented as an artist, horribly bad as an analyst or journalist.

He says law and accounting will be ‘fully automated’ just like software. He says engineers now spend their time debugging and doing strategic work and architecture. That’s not fully automated! This sales pitch is so transparently dishonest.

Batya Ungar-Sargon SHOCKS CNN by saying Trump doesn't agree with the DHS rhetoric. "I found Secretary Noem's comments on Alex Pretti to be unforgivable. Everything I've heard about this person suggests that he was a wonderful human being. And to desecrate the dead like that is utterly unjustifiable. And I don't see how a person should be allowed to remain in public service after lying so blatantly to the American people. Now, that said, it's very clear that the President is on a very different page. He refused to say that he supports the ICE agent in the shooting until we have more information." Both things can both true.

@christopherrufo 1. It seems that the majority of viewers do not find it an ambiguous situation. 2. The logic that Pretti deserved death for been part of an activist effort to protect people from ICE is circular/self-defeating because his death seems to demonstrate why these efforts were needed

The courts will sort out whether or not the shooting was justified. It is, at a minimum, ambiguous. But we cannot pretend that Alex Pretti was a volunteer crossing guard helping an old lady cross the street. He was there to physically disrupt law enforcement, which is a risk.

@BlueBoxDave You realize that public opinion on this has radically turned, and that when the history books are written, your implication that he deserved to be executed for directing traffic will be preserved for everyone to see?

“He was directing traffic.” Why was he directing traffic? He’s not a cop. It seems very likely he was “directing traffic,” in order to assist an organized mission to impede federal agents. That’s a felony. He likely chose to commit a felony while armed.
Jonah Goldberg@JonahDispatch

@marcthiessen Because after watching the video, people saw that they shot him only after disarming him? Because he was directing traffic until the agents shoved a woman to the ground and he went over to assist? Because he never drew the weapon and it’s not illegal to legally carry a gun?

@michaelshermer Michael, it seems like you are not following what is happening in the video. She's not saying they will harass the agents later, she's referring to agents potentially showing up at her home. Thats why she says "we don't change our plates"

New footage makes this tragedy less ambiguous: 1. Renee Good was not an innocent bystander who accidentally wandered into ICE actions 2. She & the other activists were not peacefully protesting from the sidewalk but taunting ICE agents (“show your face”) & standing in the road 3. She was not in distress (smiling) 4. Her partner got out of the car to further taunt agents in the road: “you want to come at us?" 5. Her partner stated they intended to harass ICE agents “later” 6. When commanded to get out of the car, Good’s partner yells “drive, drive” Again, should she die for these actions? No. But such actions have consequences.

@Sr_Lazarus @LinkofSunshine I'd wager this situation is because they are concerned about the area being used by homeless people. There is a seating area off to the side, it is small and cramped and you need a ticket to enter.

The argument for introducing your kids to skiing seems to boil down to “Maybe your kids will be really rich.” I agree that if you’re sure your kids will be rich the calculus changes.

@NYCDailyCommute @admcrlsn Because the goal wasn't just revenue collection, it was increased quality of life by having less car-jammed streets. Have you spent time in NYC? The thing where they shut streets down and make them into public areas is amazing, feels almost european. This is in pursuit of that.

Everyone wants to live within a walkable distance to a place like this, with a bakery, a butcher, a tailor, a bookstore, a barber, a cafe and various other businesses within walking distance. A farmer's market every weekend. Safe and free of criminals. Church bells. Schoolhouse. Trustworthy neighbours. A mayor who is a good person and wears a top hat. Is this too much to ask for?

@RossBarkan The 2nd part really made it hit home. If I didn't know so many zionists personally who feel comfortable telling me about their apathy for slaughtered children because I am also jewish, it would be easier to side with Israel. Suspect the same is true of many like me.

@RossBarkan No stats on this, but as a jew under 40: feels like it was the combo of seeing copious video of carnage in Gaza + personally knowing many many pro-israeli folks who make clear that they don't care how many palestinian kids die. Know many in my cohort who feel the same.

Young, left-leaning Jews feel no real affinity for Israel. It's generational and they won't change their views as they age. Israel hawks lost a generation of Jews and they won't get them back.
