BREAKING: Senator Tammy Baldwin bravely speaks out to condemn Donald Trump's "gravely serious" arrest of a Wisconsin county judge for allegedly helping an undocumented immigrant evade ICE.
Now is the time to draw a line in the sand...
"In the United States, we have a system of checks and balances and separations of power for damn good reasons. The President's administration arresting a sitting judge is a gravely serious and drastic move, and it threatens to breach those very separations of power," Baldwin stated.
"Make no mistake, we do not have kings in this country and we are a democracy governed by laws that everyone must abide by," she continued.
"By relentlessly attacking the judicial system, flouting court orders and arresting a sitting judge, this president is putting those basic democratic values that Wisconsinites hold dear on the line," she went on.
"While details of this exact case remain minimal, this action fits into the deeply concerning pattern of this president’s lawless behavior and undermining courts and Congress’s checks on his power," the Democratic senator added.
The arrest of Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan has sent shockwaves across the country, constituting as it does a direct assault on the judiciary.
Trump's MAGA FBI has accused Dugan of helping an undocumented immigrant evade arrest after she stood up to plainclothes ICE agents who barged into her courtroom to make an arrest.
While the senator is correct that we still need to wait for the full details of the case to emerge, as always it's best to presume the worst about this administration. This is part of a pattern of unrelenting attacks on the judiciary.
Donald Trump and his minions at the FBI and Justice Department don't believe in due process, don't believe in the separation of powers, and fundamentally don't believe in the rule of law. They want to intimidate judges across the country into bowing to their fascist agenda. We cannot allow that to happen.
