@alanthefisher like yes it had a lot of issues with the design BUT there was literally funding allocated multiple times to fix it and expand it to actually useful destinations that were repeatedly killed off!

New renderings of the new Commanders stadium at RFK again show many parcels of the site will be surface parking before residential/retail construction starts, probably in years after stadium opens.
The renderings also show the scale of the two parking decks. They're *big*.

@maxdubler 2 stairs in a small building is just silly tbh. My old apartment had each stairwell on either side of the elevator with a tiny (useless) hallway between them. It's just obvious how silly the whole thing is in such a context.

This report models evacuation times for small floor plate buildings with 1 stair vs 2, finding that 2 stairs is faster.
It does NOT model evacuation times for the large floor plate buildings with 2 stairs that are allowed under current law for comparison, which is odd!

OK - final call for Wed. The government will be open, but with a 1-hour delayed start time and with the option for unscheduled telework or unscheduled leave. We realize that many of you are dealing with highly different conditions depending on where you live. The DOTs understand that there is still work to be done in some residential areas, but are continuing to make progress. We encourage all employees to reach out to their managers to discuss a telework option as needed to ensure everyone's safety. The official notification will be posted on the @USOPM site shortly.

Mid-day weather/office closure update from @USOPM: Regional DOTS are reporting significant work in progress on secondary roads in time for tomorrow morning commute hours. Road conditions for major arteries remain very good. Rail and bus services are expected to return to normal for tomorrow commute times. We'll keep you updated as we learn more, but as noted yesterday, if things remain on track, we are likely to be open tomorrow with unscheduled telework and leave authorized.

@GuiveAssadi @cairoasmith Came here to say this. A lot of the factors behind the Chinese century of humiliation were self-inflicted as they refused to modernize both technology and political systems since they had been so dominant for so long.
By the time they tried to change course, it was too late.

I don't like the phrase "American century of humiliation." It makes it sound like our enemies conspired brilliantly to bring us down a peg.

I find this type of comment so elitist. It IS the most inconvenient and stressful form of long distance public transportation, yet people still use it in droves because they have no other choice. Are we going to just pretend that's not an insane class divide worth highlighting?

@sam_d_1995 I don‘t really think that simple grids are an advancement. Cities should be fractal, have centers and sub centers. Views should not just follow lines. Streets should bend and have odd corners.

actually disagree. US cities lapped European cities in the early 1900s, with simple grids and tons of transit. the problem is that we bulldozed most of those cities with highways and parking lots in the 60s

@bryancsk this is quite literally one of the main reasons I use Linux. There was geniune innovation that took place on Desktop Windows/Mac for about 20 years that we were behind on but now they're getting worse so we literally have to do nothing and win!
