When I became Immigration Minister in 2013, boat arrivals were at an all time high. The policy changes I oversaw - particularly regional resettlement - delivered a 90% reduction in people putting their lives at risk on boats.

I talked tonight with a close friend from Queensland who gave me some of the reasons he thinks that the no campaign is doing well there.. and he also gave me an insight into racism.. because he has worked through it all as an Aboriginal man.. what I think we all need to understand is that the reality of some parts of Queensland was horrific for Aboriginal people. it was like confronting a mincing machine.. you could not win.. so you compromised and found ways of getting along.. the Voice feels to many like being thrown under a bus for an uncertain outcome.. older people are extremely practical.. and of course that did not mean compromising on law and culture as he said to me echoing an Arnhem land elder Dr. Gondarra "Nobody can speak for my country.. Voice is not as good as a treaty". To have any meaning the Voice, a new constitutional mechanism, must be linked to the gurrutu kinship system. But no-one can say that a parliament could give such a guarantee so it feels like another false dawn. It takes a real leap of courage and understanding. I do think most Aboriginal people make that leap of courage and understanding. As to Queensland racism.. my friend said to me Catholics always look to a saint when things go wrong.. racists look to a devil to divert themselves when they know things are wrong. This is why it is so hard to speak with those who are avidly for voting no. So we do need to appeal to our better angels... much better option. Voting yes will create new good for our land.
