Very few people will believe this. But it is true. This is exactly what “The Singularity” means. Total, radical change from what came before. Hang on tight. Things are about to get *really* interesting. And rather bumpy. 📈🚀✨

It’s almost impossible to overstate how small-minded and ideologically blinkered these people are. It’s like a Monty Python sketch. The guy they’re talking about - @elonmusk - is possibly doing more to advance humanity’s collective capabilities and horizons than any other person. And they absolutely hate him for it. ‘Our planet can spin without him’ - yes that’s true. It could spin when we were cavemen. It could spin without the internet, and without antibiotics, and without electricity, and without any of the other inventions that have allowed humanity to flourish. But WE, humanity, are prospering over and above the wildest dreams of those who came before us, in large part BECAUSE people like Musk have forced us forwards while people like Jeremy sit around sniping at them for it. This sounds like I’m just writing a massive pro-Elon screed but the hatred he attracts speaks to something far deeper. He’s up against a completely morally inverted worldview that hates progress. As are the rest of us.

@Noahpinion NYC has more homicides by a factor of 3 but you are conversely much more likely to be mugged or physically attacked in London. Pick your poison. I go with NYC because I'm not that worried about being shot in a gang beef.

Elon Musk’s visible shock when confronted with the fact that London is safer than American cities exposes a massive gap between social media algorithms and statistical reality. Despite the endless stream of online panic about ”dangerous” European capitals, the numbers don’t lie: London is objectively safer than almost every city in the United States. The idea that London is a crime-ridden wasteland is a triumph of online disinformation, allowed to spread unchecked on platforms like X because it fits a specific political narrative. The actual data shows that London's homicide rate sits at roughly 1.1 per 100,000 people. To put that in perspective, 100 out of the 100 largest US cities (!!!) have higher homicide rates than London, and 49 out of 50 US states are more dangerous on this metric. London achieves this safety record despite being a massive, diverse global hub of nine million residents. Critics often point to property crime or phone snatching to argue that London is worse, but using petty crime to ignore murder statistics is fundamentally flawed. Criminologists rely heavily on homicide rates because non-fatal crime statistics are notoriously harder to compare and more unreliable. Theft, sexual violence, and minor assault reporting rates fluctuate wildly depending on how much citizens trust local police or whether they need a police report for an insurance claim. Forms of non-lethal violence also vary based on legislation: you will naturally see more stabbings in a country with fewer guns, and more gun violence in a country with more guns. Homicide, by contrast, is an absolute and objective metric. It measures the ultimate form of violence, correlates strongly with overall severe crime, and leaves almost no room for underreporting. It counts all forms of lethal violence in an unhackable way. It is impossible to claim your city is safer than London if you have a five times higher homicide rate, even if London scores worse on theft. London has plenty of room for improvement, but American commentators living under drastically higher murder rates should clean up their own backyard before preaching to others

@cdscih I think at this point there has been a large effect of migration of the ambitious and also the killing of the courageous in the two world wars, so that there remaining population is basically content to live in a zoo I would personally be very unhappy living in Europe

Scott Galloway just explained why China doesn’t need to build better AI than America. It only needs to make American AI worthless. Galloway: “I think China is beginning to engage in what I’ll call AI dumping.” Not competing. Dumping. It’s the term economists use for flooding a foreign market with below-cost goods until the domestic industry collapses. Galloway: “They’re going to have a series of open-weight models. About a third of corporations now are supposedly using Chinese lightweight open-weight models that are cheaper.” Not better. Cheaper. A third of corporations. Already. China isn’t trying to out-innovate Silicon Valley. It’s trying to collapse the economics beneath it. Price warfare at the infrastructure layer. Galloway: “If I were Xi, I would just dump cheap AI into the US market.” This playbook is old. China ran it with steel. Ran it with solar. Ran it with semiconductors. Flood a market with a cheaper version until the domestic industry can’t sustain itself. AI is next. Galloway: “The moment large corporations start announcing they’re disengaging these multi-million dollar site licenses with Anthropic or OpenAI, they’re using these inexpensive Chinese models…” One CFO after another decides the Chinese model at a fraction of the cost is good enough. Not better. Good enough. “Good enough” at a lower price has killed more market leaders than any superior product ever has. Galloway: “…and the market realizes that there’s no way they can justify these incredible valuations, I think the US market crashes.” Not because the technology failed. Because the business model did. American AI companies are valued on the assumption that corporations will pay premium prices for premium models. China’s whole strategy is to make that assumption false. Galloway: “40% of the S&P now is directly or tangentially related to this giant bet America’s making on AI.” 40% of the S&P. Tied to one sector. Galloway: “The majority of GDP growth over the last two years has come from AI CapEx.” The majority of GDP growth. From one source. America didn’t diversify its future. It concentrated everything into a single bet, then left that bet undefended. Galloway: “If that slows down, we are immediately in a recession.” Immediately. Not gradually. Not over quarters. The distance between AI boom and American recession is one procurement decision. America built the most advanced AI on Earth and forgot to build an economy that survives someone selling it cheaper. The threat to American AI was never that China would build something smarter. It was that China would build something cheaper, and American corporations would choose the price. China’s real weapon isn’t Chinese technology. It’s American capitalism. The same rational self-interest that built the AI industry will dismantle it the moment a cheaper alternative appears. The market has no patriotism. Only price sensitivity. The technology race was never the real race. The real race was always whether America could turn its AI dominance into something that survives being undercut. America hasn’t even started running it. China already has.

I am not against open models. I am against companies moving their data to China. It MUST be kept here. Unconditionally. You MUST have the best cybersecurity that exists- CrowdStrike/Palo Alto. Your vigilance must be irresolute.
