Kenyan Black Orthodox Tea is a premium, artisanal product primarily sold to speciality tea markets in Europe and North America. Orthodox teas with their whole-leaf grades cater to discerning buyers seeking complex flavours. These labour-intensive teas, featuring honeyed malt or floral notes, command premium prices in luxury tea shops and speciality retailers. Grades include: OPA, FOP (My absolute favourite and the base of @maisonchailtd's Earl Grey, OP1, Pekoe, FBOPFS, FBOPF, FOF + many more!

Kenyan purple tea is a remarkable variety made from a specially bred purple-leaf tea plant developed by the Tea Research Institute of Kenya. Unlike regular teas, it naturally produces anthocyanins, the same antioxidants found in blueberries, through the selective breeding of Camellia sinensis, not grafting or genetic modification. Scientists discovered a rare purple-leaf mutation and cultivated it over the years to enhance these beneficial compounds, giving the leaves their vibrant colour and health properties. The result is a tea with a mild, earthy flavour, half the caffeine of black tea, and potential benefits for heart health and inflammation, all from the plant’s own natural chemistry. (Some Indian tea producers say that Kenyans stole the cuttings of this cultivar and claimed it as their own... could be rumours ....) (@maisonchailtd sell this, so does Horera Tea Factory and a few KTDA factories) It tastes earthy and to get a vibrant purple liquor you need to add lemon to it, generally the liquor produced is lightish purple

Kenyan white tea, crafted from the prized 4/36 cultivar, is a rare and luxurious speciality tea made from hand-plucked buds that undergo a 10-12-day shade drying process to develop their delicate floral and honeyed flavours. With ~30,000 buds required per kilogram, its production is extraordinarily labour-intensive, resulting in a refined, silvery tea similar to China’s Silver Needle. Health benefits: rich in antioxidants (polyphenols and catechins), some varieties are low in caffeine, and others are high in caffeine. Its amino acids and trichomes may support skin health and immunity, while its gentle processing preserves antimicrobial and metabolism-boosting properties. A true connoisseur’s tea, it embodies both artisan craftsmanship and wellness in every sip. (Tastes light and earthy, great infused with peach blossom or Jasmine, my brand @maisonchailtd sell it and so do Tea Research Institute in Kenya)

The finest teas are hand-plucked, typically selecting either "two leaves and a bud" or "one leaf and a bud" depending on the desired quality and variety. Similar to wine, the terroir/region/province of tea has a significant impact on its taste. All teas must be processed in one way or another, depending on the type of tea being produced. Processing tea can be as simple as shade drying, or as complex as withering and fermenting. Finite differences, like 10 degrees Celsius higher during the drying process, can alter the overall taste of the tea. Production methods within the factory make a huge difference to the final product produced. (Photo: @maisonchailtd)

Here's a thread explaining everything that you need to know about tea. To be clear, when I say 'tea,' I mean the beverage made from Camellia sinensis. All teas mentioned in this thread can be found either at any KTDA / Independent factory in Kenya or at the Tea Research Institute in Kericho. (Content is directly lifted from my slides, which I prepared from the Drunken Lecture I delivered in Nairobi, Kenya, September 2025 unless stated otherwise, photos from google unless otherwise stated).
