THROWBACK THURSDAY! In 1992 Louisiana enacted a map with an egregious racial gerrymander to create a 2nd black seat. It was cleaned up in 1994 to look very similar to the district SCOTUS struck down yesterday. It was finally eliminated in 1996. The black Democrat who was drawn out? Cleo Fields.

Sixty-one years ago on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, John Lewis and hundreds of marchers had their skulls cracked open so that Black Americans could cast a ballot that counted. Yesterday, the United States Supreme Court and the Governor of Louisiana are telling those marchers and the ones who never came home that their blood was spilled for nothing. And now Governor Landry intends to suspend the May 16 primary a day before early voting begins, after ballots have already been cast by our military overseas so the Legislature can hurry to draw Black voters back out of the map they were finally drawn into. Voters are being asked to wait, to vote twice, to trust a process that keeps moving the goalposts every time we get close to the line. Let me be clear about what is happening. We fought for the second majority-Black district in court for years. We won it. And the moment it produced representation that reflected this state, the rules changed. That is the pattern. That has always been the pattern. From Bloody Sunday to today, the tactics evolve but the intent is the same to make our vote cost more than anyone else’s. I’m calling on every Louisianan who believes this state belongs to all of us to stay loud, stay organized, and stay ready.

Everyone in Long-Term Care in the American South should be lobbying their legislatures HARD to eliminate gerrymandered dem districts following today’s ruling. If for no other reason than blocking the openly-stated threat of bringing back some arbitrary staffing mandate.

@BigEasyConserv Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is still active, but it is a fragmented shell of its former self, with membership significantly reduced to a few thousand members nationwide. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, various KKK chapters still operate, Loyal White Knights is the largest.

I've spent 6 decades in the Deep South My father was raised in an orange grove in a place as Southern as can be. My uncle lives in Georgia. To my knowledge, I have never met or known anyone in the KKK. I've never seen a rally. Nobody in the Klan has ever approached me to discuss it If it exists, it has no power or influence. It puts up no candidates for office, controls no House districts, organizes nothing, gets no financial support. The United States is the least-racist nation on Earth
