The CIA was running an intelligence operation inside the Delhi Gymkhana Club. And the Indian government just shut it down fifty years later. Not the operation. The club. 27 acres. Stone's throw from the Prime Minister's residence. Manicured lawns, tennis courts, a wooden ballroom, multiple bars. Delhi's most prestigious address for over a century. And for a period during the Cold War, one of the most productive intelligence drop sites the CIA ran anywhere in Asia. Here is how it worked. Indian government rules at the time explicitly forbade officials from meeting foreign nationals without clearance. The Gymkhana Club was the loophole nobody closed. Spies operating under diplomatic cover walked in freely, sat down with Indian Army officers, bureaucrats and government officials, and had conversations that could never officially happen anywhere else in Delhi. The club had a second utility that made it even more valuable. India's Intelligence Bureau routinely tailed foreign diplomats suspected of running intelligence operations. The Gymkhana's sprawling layout, multiple bars, constant social traffic and interconnected grounds made it the perfect place to lose a surveillance tail cleanly and move without being watched. This was not rumour. Former CIA operative Robert Baer documented it in granular detail in his 2002 autobiography See No Evil. The operation at the centre of it involved the T-72. The Soviet built main battle tank that formed the backbone of India's armoured capability during the Cold War. Detailed intelligence on India's T-72 fleet moved through this channel in ways that have never been fully disclosed publicly. Indian Army officers at the bar. CIA operatives at the next table. Conversations that shaped American intelligence assessments of India's military capability for years. And it all happened under a roof that Delhi's elite used for tennis and dinner. The government has now given the club until June 5 to vacate. National security. Defence infrastructure. Urgent public interest. Whether this eviction is about the land value, a specific security concern, or something connecting back to that history is a question worth sitting with. But the Cold War was not just fought on borders and in briefing rooms. Sometimes it was fought over drinks at the Gymkhana. Credit : @SandeepUnnithan , India Today

@manishsinha11 @waqureshi8 @grok True. Let us love to see the young officers who face the bullets mostly upto company commander levels ultimately finding a good share in higher level ranks rather than peace time exxellence alone. Hope you don't hate that ?

List naming approval of those making it to Lt Gen rank is just out. There is PVSM, VSM, galore behind each name. One feels happy for their success. There is also regret for those, who sacrifice serving in active field upto company commander level but seldom get to Maj Gen rank. This evil trend became more firmed in after Kargil Generals' eco system of war vifgins got entrenched since Gen VP Malik..

AN UNPOPULAR TAKE BUT FISCAL OBLIGATIONS CAN'T BE IGNORED. FUEL PRICE HIKED BY RS 7 IN 11 DAYS. THOUGH UNAVOIDABLE THE POLITICAL SLOGANEERING IS A LITTLE TOO SIMPLISTIC. Instead of comparing which state slaps what VAT rate lets accept that the taxes (central and state) are needed to raise revenue for welfare schemes so those less fortunate get a helping hand. In top democracies too the consumers are taxed at the pump. These are the numbers that we should focus on. Is NDA doing worse on this score? Approx Total Fuel Tax Burden (% of Pump Price) United States: 15–20% Canada: 25–35% United Kingdom: 60% Germany: 55–60% France: 55–60% Italy: 60–65% Spain: 50–55% Japan: 40–50% Australia: 20–25%

Sudhir Chaudhary has ripped the mask off the UPA-era doormat media, the ecosystem that genuflected before the Congress and the Gandhis while pretending to practice fearless journalism. Rajdeep Sardesai, now a self-appointed high priest of media morality, turned his interview with Sonia Gandhi into a saas-bahu serial. Umashankar Singh, then with NDTV, asked Rahul Gandhi “difficult” questions about samosas and jalebis. And Shekhar Gupta of The Print, among the chief architects of the doormat media culture, famously asked Sonia Gandhi whether she could cook and toss pasta. Such bravery. Such journalistic rigour. There were others too. Vir Sanghvi, for instance, little more than a glorified stenographer, took dictations from corporate lobbyists, while maintaining the facade of being a moral custodian of the nation. These days, the chap writes food columns and reviews hotel properties. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi has faced countless interviews and answered genuinely tough questions over the years. Yet this same entitled ecosystem still throws around the term “Godi Media” with a straight face. The hypocrisy is staggering.

He served his country by putting his life on the line. He has a right to speak, and he pays an annual membership fee. As for loitering which is illegal, a bonafide member has a right to use a property. A vast number of members at this ‘elite’ club are defence personnel who defended the freedom we enjoy.

😂😂😂 This entitled guy who is an ex-Army Officer thinks because Delhi Gymkhana is his Second Home and his whole family loiters about here whole day, the Govt of India has given fictitious grounds to evict them.

@Manish089 @Tara_Deshpande Your basic assumption is itself flawed. That is why you should not comment on things u have not experienced yourself. Most of the times the maximum comment on the armed forces are by ppl who know nothing about them. Stay within ur core competencies. Leave the rest

@manishsinha11 @Tara_Deshpande The Indian Army is largely inherited from the British Army, there is already too much divide inside between Officers and Jawans. In an institution that already has such established divisions, who am I to divide it further?

@Tara_Deshpande The actual defenders are sipahi, subehdar, major, captain fellows, not the whiskey sipping generals sitting in Chandigarh or delhi. If you care so much, make the sipahi, subehdars members of this club. But you won't because they come from lower strata, villages who won't fit here.

DELHI GYMKHANA CLUB. THE LAST VESTIGE OF COLONIAL INDIA AND THE REDOUBT OF BABALOG (LUTYENS) PRIVILEGE, NEPOTISM IS NOW GOING TO BE CLAIMED BY THE CENTRE. Centre Moves to Take Back Delhi Gymkhana Club Land, Cites Defence and Public Security Needs In a significant move, the Central Government has ordered the re-entry and resumption of the Delhi Gymkhana Club premises located at 2, Safdarjung Road, New Delhi, stating that the land is required for urgent public and strategic purposes. The order was issued on May 22, 2026, by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs through the Land & Development Office (L&DO). The government stated that the property, spread across 27.3 acres, lies in a highly sensitive and strategic area of the national capital and is now needed for strengthening defence infrastructure, public security arrangements, governance infrastructure, and other public-interest projects. According to the communication, the premises had originally been leased to the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club Ltd., now known as Delhi Gymkhana Club Ltd., for the purpose of maintaining a social and sporting club. The Delhi Gymkhana Club is considered one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in India. The club shifted to its present location in 1913 and was then known as the “Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club”, with Spencer Harcourt Butler serving as its first President. After India attained Independence in 1947, the word “Imperial” was dropped and the institution came to be known simply as the Delhi Gymkhana Club. The club traces its origins to July 1913. In its early years, the Polo Club functioned as part of the Gymkhana Club before becoming a separate entity in the 1930s after shifting to New Delhi. Historical records relating to the club’s origins are limited, and systematic documentation of its history is understood to have begun only around 1927. Referring to Clause 4 of the lease deed, the Centre noted that the lessor has the authority to re-enter the premises if the land is required for a public purpose. Exercising those powers, the President of India, acting through the L&DO, has determined the lease and ordered immediate re-entry of the property. The order further states that the entire land parcel, along with all buildings, structures, lawns and fittings standing on it, shall vest absolutely with the President of India through the Land & Development Office. The Land & Development Office is scheduled to take over the premises on June 5, 2026. The Delhi Gymkhana Club has been directed to hand over peaceful possession of the property on the said date, failing which possession would be taken in accordance with law. The communication was signed by Deputy Land & Development Officer Suchit Goyal and issued with the approval of the competent authority.
