This is eye-opening. A fast food job in the US pays significantly more than AI developer jobs in France or Germany, which have higher salaries than most other European countries. Europeans simply don’t notice how poor they become compared to others. Choices have consequences.

@maoretm @lugaricano Houses are not built not for lack of land or legal rigidity, but because most of the potential demand cannot afford them. Builders know that if they build more houses they wouldn't sell them. That's why price pressure falls on rents.

Long FT piece today on Spain's "Big migration experiment". Spain has an invaluable advantage in having an easy to assimilate population of potential immigrants (LatAm). The government is throwing this advantage away and risking turning the population against immigrants by having a permissive attitude to illegal arrivals and passive immigration policy that resulted in 665,000 immigrants per year (over 1.3% of the population) that is straining services, housing and infrastructure. The decisions on regularization are being taken by Sánchez, by Presidential order without taking it to parliament. Sánchez's advisor gives his view on the electoral advantages to the FT "One person close to Sánchez, however, flags a countervailing factor. Many immigrants have already become Spanish citizens and owe something to the prime minister. “Some of them will vote too.”"

Most Starlink airlines give access to their customers for free. He’s probably right that RyanAir customers don’t want to pay for add ons, but I think they would get increased bookings that more than made up for the cost of outfitting the planes. Ultimately they are a low cost airline that has built their brand around saying no to frills, but eventually I predict they will eventually adopt starlink anyway.

The "progressive" backlash against this wonderful Nobel Peace Prize reminds us that, to them, the world is a simple cartoon where anyone who opposes the West is, by default, on the right side of history. This results in the stunning absurdity of defending a corrupt kleptocrat in Venezuela, murderous theocrats in Iran, terrorists in the Middle East, a neo-imperialist in Russia. They mistake opposition to the Western democracies for justice. While Maduro stole multiple Venezuelan elections, most so called progressives stayed silent or excused it. Only Chile's President Boric spoke out. His position shows his peers are hypocrites. It shows the difference between someone who truly holds principles like free speech and democracy, and those who only get angry selectively. They will defend any tyrant, as long as that tyrant opposes an enemy they dislike.

A què esperen? Ja han passat més de 24h d'ençà que el Govern espanyol no va aconseguir aprovar el seu macrodecret òmnibus que contenia més de 80 mesures en àmbits molt diversos i dispersos (que no havia consensuat, tot i governar en minoria). Entre elles, l'augment de les pensions i descomptes al transport amb les quals sempre hem dit que estem d'acord. Els hem sentit cridar molt, excitar-se molt. Però a hores d'ara encara no els hem vist prendre cap decisió. Per exemple, no han convocat cap consell de ministres per portar a aprovació els decrets que ja saben que tenien el nostre vot a favor. Per què? Perquè els jubilats i els usuaris els importen un rave. Només són eines al servei del desgast de l'altre, no busquen solucions tot i que les tenen perfectament a l'abast de la mà. Practiquen allò de que quan pitjor (per l'oposició) millor (per al govern, no per a la gent). Si eren temes tan urgents i tan importants, a què esperen? L'unica incontinenza che noto e' quella del sapientone anonimo che sentenzia senza comprendere. Patrimoniali generalizzate sui grandi miliardari porterebbero a severi danni economici e a fallimenti. Vediamo perche', somarello anonimo ma elegante. 1. Tralasciamo l'idiozia di volerla fare "mondiale". T'immagini se a Singapore o Dubai o anche solo in Cina non farebbero i salti mortali per ospitare i tassati. 2. Assumiamo che 40 paesi occidentali seguano questa idea folle: 1% o 2% di patrimoniale all'anno sui patrimoni superiori a 100 miliardi (secondo le quotazioni di borsa). Cosa fa il miliardario di turno? Si protegge. Come fa a proteggersi? Si sposta. Ma non solo lui, deve spostare l'azienda perche' ovviamente la patrimoniale devi legarla al luogo principale del business. 3. Allora tu dici: okay, ti tasso sul valore di borsa. E lui molla NYSE o Nasdaq alla ricerca del porto sicuro dove non venire tassato. Tutti a HK, o dove gli promettano il trattamento che cerca. Cosa succede al valore di borsa dell'azienda? Che cade, si riduce, forse crolla. Cosa succede alle aziende il cui valore di borsa crolla? Che hanno difficolta' a finanziarsi e tendono ad andare male, a volte falliscono. Ma non basta. 4. Spostare il core di Google o di Amazon altrove significa spostare quantita' sostanziali di wealth e know how altrove. Migliaia di persone molto skilled, capaci, creative, informate e hardworking (tutto il contrario di te, a occhio e croce). Dove? Non so, ma di certo non a Firenze. Che effetti ha questa operazione su tutto questo? 5. Che chiunque stia crescendo in wealth perche' ha avuto una grande idea (ed il culo necessario per realizzarla) fara' lo stesso e si spostera' in anticipo. Delocalizzara', come amate dire. Con ovvi effetti distruttivi sulle aziende, l'occupazione altamente qualificata, la borsa, gli investimenti e la FIDUCIA NEL PAESE. Danni a catena in cambio di una patrimoniale che se colpisce per un anno e due siete fortunati! Nessuno va a investire e lavorare in un paese che, siccome il VALORE DI BORSA (non i soldi in tasca, beati somari che parlate a vanvera) cresce decide di portartene via un 1% o 2% l'anno!! Sono egoisti questi super-ricchi? Forse si, ma sono anche svegli abbastanza da aver creato il giochetto attraverso cui tu spari scemenze con una incontinenza pari alla signorile ignoranza che manifesti. P.S. NBC recently published an article titled: "U.S., European officials broach topic of peace negotiations with Ukraine, sources say." Once again, we find ourselves discussing weak politicians who are looking for a solution by appeasing the aggressor. If the U.S. and Europe were to pressure Ukraine into making territorial concessions (which could be highly unpopular within Ukraine, placing immense political pressure on the President), it might only strengthen Putin's belief in the West's weakness. In 2014, the annexation of Crimea and the occupation of Donbas was met with a weak response, further encouraging Putin to the events in 2022. Unfortunately, there seem to be no diplomatic solutions that can lead to a positive outcome. It's difficult to envision a scenario where peace can be achieved in Europe if Putin's demands are met. Even if Russia or Putin were to provide security guarantees, their past actions, such as violating the Budapest Memorandum and "security guarantees" to Prigozhin, make these assurances meaningless. It's uncertain how any "agreement" could ensure Ukraine's safety. Russia will spend the coming years strengthening its military, while Western support for Ukraine, already dwindling during wartime, could be even scarcer during peacetime. This can only encourage the known pattern: - Invade a country. - Use the threat of nuclear escalation to pressure the West. - Wear down the West until they concede. - Repeat. To prevent long-term instability in Europe, sporadic conflicts and even another large-scale war between Ukraine and Russia, the focus should start shifting from pressuring Ukraine to concede territories into providing enough support to Ukraine in order to win. This support could enable Ukraine to inflict sufficient damage on Russia, compelling them to withdraw, as seen in cases like Kherson and Kharkiv. Anything else is a search for easy but wrong decisions, political cuckoldism and decadence.
