Education Thread: UTXO vs Account-based models
One of the most important differences between blockchains is how they shape everything from UX to scalability.
UTXO (e.g. Cardano, Bitcoin):
✅ Deterministic transactions → predictable outcomes
✅Better parallelism → easier scaling (Leios direction)
✅Stronger security model → no shared mutable state
− Harder developer experience
− More complex UX (fragmentation, fees, batching)
Cardano adds to the UTXO model with Extended UTXO (eUTXO). This adds the ability to have smart contracts and programmable money with UTXOs, building upon the foundations of Bitcoin.
Account model (e.g. Ethereum, Solana):
✅Simpler mental model → easier for developers
✅Better UX → balances feel intuitive
✅Mature tooling and ecosystem
− Global state contention → limits parallelism
− More attack surfaces (reentrancy, state exploits)
Neither is "perfect"; they optimise for different trade-offs.
Understanding this is key to having real L1 discussions.
