One of my favourite pieces in St Peter’s Square at the Vatican: a statue that first appears to be a beggar, transforming into an angel as you move around it - by Timothy Schmalz.

Why, one must ask, did Boris Johnson feel compelled to intervene, when his own record remains so deeply compromised. Your tenure is not some distant memory open to convenient reinterpretation. It is marked by repeated lapses in judgement and integrity, some of which, if examined with proper scrutiny, could yet carry serious consequences. Let us not forget the episode involving your colleague who travelled across the country during restrictions, visiting parks and beyond, while the public was asked to make real sacrifices. You defended him, repeatedly and emphatically, until the position became untenable and you were forced to dismiss him. Only then did the truth begin to emerge more fully, much of it from within your own ranks. That pattern, of denial followed by reluctant admission, is not easily erased. So the question presents itself quite plainly. Why speak at all. What authority remains. You are no longer a figure of consequence in public life, and the party you once led is itself struggling for relevance. There comes a point when silence would serve better than intervention. That point has long since passed.

@soniasodha Watching that Olympic boxing match was sickening. The women were terrified, their fears were shamefully ignored. I sympathise with the real desperation of transgender people, but in sport it’s a different matter altogether. My friends who are transgender agree wholeheartedly.

As much as these mad ideologues would like it to be, it’s not a “human right” for men to be able to identify into women’s sports. In fact, it undermines the rights of another sex class these experts don’t seem bothered about (I wonder why). theguardian.com/sport/2026/mar…

The Rev. Anton Mittens 🌹👮🎓
Supreme Leader of the Flag Shaggers Ryan Bridge, has a go and becomes aggressive at a female cyclist who has the audacity to challenge his activities. The big girls blouse goes on to obstructs her passage, only to falsely claim assault as she tries to ride away. It's also about time that cherry picker was seized. It is consistently driven in an anti-social manner, in this case obstructing the highway, and parking on the pavement. Legislation is aplenty to facilitate this.

It is difficult to accept the basis upon which these so called facts are presented. In modern times, the two most demonstrably unsuccessful Prime Ministers this country has endured are Boris Johnson and Liz Truss. No other Prime Minister, including Sir Keir Starmer, approaches the scale of those failures. What has followed is a narrative constructed and sustained across major broadcasters, including the BBC, ITV, Sky News, and GB News, alongside sections of the wider press, the persistent chorus of voices from within the Conservative Party, and the influence of Reform UK. Within that narrative, criticism of Sir Keir has been constant from the moment he assumed office. That scrutiny stands in stark contrast to the latitude afforded to his predecessors, particularly at times when serious errors were made and rules were plainly disregarded. The effect is cumulative. A narrative is repeated, reinforced, and amplified until it presents itself as established fact, regardless of whether it withstands scrutiny. It is this constant echo that many have grown weary of, particularly when it appears so plainly unbalanced in its application. It is not unreasonable to conclude that such imbalance reflects editorial inclination rather than objective assessment. A Labour Prime Minister does not sit comfortably with certain proprietors or institutions, and that discomfort appears to shape the tone of coverage. Yet one fact remains beyond dispute. Sir Keir secured a decisive electoral mandate, a landslide victory that confers both authority and responsibility. Those who supported him expect that mandate to be honoured through steady and effective governance. To date, there has been no failure of the kind so readily alleged. What we are witnessing instead is the noise of political transition. Meanwhile, the Conservative Party finds itself diminished, its relevance increasingly in question, and its future uncertain. It would therefore be welcome if sections of the press returned to the task of reporting events as they are, rather than seeking to shape them into something they are not.

After winning one of the biggest landslides in UK election history less than two years ago, Keir Starmer became the most unpopular prime minister on record. But how did that happen? @lewis_goodall is on a mission to find out.

Belgium’s publicly funded youth radio station, Studio Brussel (VRT), featured a sketch in which its breakfast presenters smashed various items on air, including a statue of Our Lady and Jesus. I asked if they were concerned it would cause offence, and if they would do the same to a symbol of Islam or Judaism.

As a priest, who has celebrated Holy Communion twice today and is departing for a Cistercian monastery tomorrow, can I just say that this 'Easter Egg rage' is nonsense. If you care that much, get yourself to church, and then perhaps you will realise that our faith is not based on confectionary or its packaging.

@revpaulwhite I recall from my childhood, (many years ago), that the egg is symbolic of the stone rolled away from the tomb entrance. We used to roll decorated hard-boiled eggs. Have I remembered correctly, or did I just make that up?

@Patrici89225734 @SarahForRuncorn Exactly, Patricia! I was there on that day in 1982. It was magnificent. To see the joy of Eid is also magnificent. Sarah, it’s really not Christian to stir up such fear and hatred. Have some decency and get to know some Moslem families. You will be welcomed.

When in a country with different mainstream religious principles and traditions to your own, it is widely accepted that you respect the customs of the nation you are in. I believe most British people would not think of doing otherwise. Recent mass Iftar events in Trafalgar Square and large scale Eid prayers in Birmingham and elsewhere cut sharply against that principle. Britain is a tolerant nation, but that should never mean failing to defend our own traditions or allowing them to be dominated for fear of causing offence. We are a country with a Christian heritage. Our laws, institutions and national life have been shaped by that tradition over centuries. Our King is Head of the Church of England and has a duty as Defender of the Faith. Many like me take great pride in our identity and believe it should be protected. Mass prayers in iconic public locations by religions whose traditional interpretations conflict fundamentally with Western values such as equality for women, gay rights and democratic freedom do not accord with British values. Public displays of religion on this scale are not in keeping with that balance. They risk appearing as a show of dominance that excludes and divides.
