The Trump Administration continues to push for deep cuts and harmful policy changes to already underfunded housing and health care services. But states and localities have the power to play a major role in supporting their communities by investing in housing solutions.

As people across the country struggle to afford housing, HUD proposed a rule today that would force 20,000 families with mixed immigration statuses to choose between losing the assistance that helps them pay rent every month or separating their family.

But it’s also time for state and local leaders to start thinking about how to mitigate harm so that no one loses their housing and ends up caught cycling in and out of shelters, street corners, jails, and emergency rooms.

State and local policymakers need to act swiftly to demand that Congress put a stop to this rushed, illogical, and inhumane policy shift, and fully fund the housing resources their communities need.

A program that provides an average benefit of about $6.20 per person per day is not bloated. It is essential, it is survival, and it is critical.

If families don't get their SNAP benefits, this doesn't just mean they won't be able to put food on their table - but their table might be at risk altogether if they then can't afford to make their rent. The Trump admin needs to release SNAP funds immediately.

Attacking people for being unable to afford the rent or for experiencing a mental health condition is the wrong approach. Fines, tickets, detention centers do a lot of harm to people, and do not solve their housing crisis.
