@ms_tourist In Soweto, Meadowlands Zone 8 and Zone 9, we always had our own spaza shops when we were growing up. At that time, we had no malls in and around Meadowlands,Soweto. That's my experience of being a bona fide ya Meadowlands, Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa. How did we get here?

We used to have Alex Hair and Jabu Stone Saloons, among others. Alex Hair was the leading brand, with salons located both in the Johannesburg City Centre and in Soweto….Dube and, I think, Mofolo. We grew up buying from our local General Dealers in rural areas. There were no Ethiopians or Somalians kwa Ceza and beyond.

The 'Americans' gang, Sophiatown, 1954, Photo by Bob Gosani (1934-1972). The 'Americans' were a notorious gang in Sophiatown led by Kortboy George Mbalweni, during the 1950s, known for their distinctive style of dress and large-scale crime. They emerged from a group of small-time criminals but became involved in theft from city shops and railway trailers, sometimes clashing with police.

After he was spotted with Maumela, Ramaphosa now says it was “just a coincidence”. Such a laughable grade 2 lie, is Ramaphosa making a mockery of Presidency and the people of South Africa? He should be summoned to the commission to answer. “Ramaphosa can lie to you with a straight face, he known no bounds” ~ Prof JJ Tabane

"I myself attended the first NCWA [National Council of African Women] conference [which took place in Bloemfontein on December 17, 1937]. The greatest moment for me was when, at that conference, I met the legendary Mrs Charlotte Manye Maxeke. When I first encountered her, her bearing, her upright head and clear eyes, proclaimed her as a woman of character and principles. She appeared firm and composed; a woman of values and standards. She gave me the impression of being conscientious and very business-like in her dealings but, above all, a woman very clear about the purpose and direction of her church and her community involvement. I did not find her easy to approach---unlike Minah Soga. i longed to get hear her and talk to her; but except for hearing her address the conference, I never had an opportunity to speak to her. Now that I look back, perhaps the disparity in our ages was a barrier to my reaching her." - Ellen Kuzwayo, 'Call me Woman', 1985. Picture: Goodman Gallery

@proudlyxeno @Newzroom405 A few months ago, Tshwane Metro Police impounded e-hailing motor vehicles because they didn't have operating licences. This was due to a backlog at the Gauteng Provincial Regulatory Entity, which issues operating licenses. Authorities must step up.

The long-running conflict between taxi operators and e-hailing drivers, marked by recent violence in Soweto and KwaZulu-Natal, has raised concerns about safety. The newly-signed National Land Transport Amendment Act (NLTA) introduces a formal regulatory framework for e-hailing services, aiming to create fairness, enhance safety, and reduce clashes. Transport Department spokesperson Collen Msibi explains its impact on drivers, passengers, and the future of South African transport. Watch: tinyurl.com/2hm7f23z #Newzroom405

@Newzroom405 The National Land Transportation Transitional Act (NLTTA)regulates the public transport sector. The act has been in operation since 2010. The act was amended since then, and it's now the National Land Transport Act. The act aims to ensure that operators comply.

@HistorySAZAR I've read his autobiography titled Autobiography of an Unknown South African. In that book, he explains the Mokgatle lineage and history and the Kekana and Makapan(Mokopane) history. He even recounts his interactions with Mandela in Johannesburg.

Naboth Makgatle (1911-1985) was a South African trade unionist and political activist. His activism was given impetus when he joined the CPSA In the 1930's. He was elected to the Pretoria district committee of the CPSA In 1941. He became General Secretary of the Non-European Distributive Worker's Union in 1943. Between 1930 and 1954, he was arrested and imprisoned on many occasions. The banning orders placed on him in 1952 and 1954, effectively denied him any form of existence in South Africa. He left South Africa in September 1954 and settled in London. He began writing his autobiography of an unknown South African in 1961.

Is there any reason why we never considered ‘National Service’ in the Defence Force for young South Africans? I can imagine a hundreds of thousands would have learnt a lot about patriotism and have been trained in emergency services skills for instance.
